<p>MOOSIC &#8212; A somber Gleyber Torres walked into the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders clubhouse shortly before 3 p.m. on Monday.</p><p>Back from New York, where he met with Yankees head team physician Dr. Christopher Amad to get his left, non-throwing, elbow checked out, Torres was sporting a black brace on his injured arm. He still hadn&#8217;t found out the results from his MRI yet. But it wasn&#8217;t going to be good news.</p><p>A half an hour later the Yankees announced that Torres would be having Tommy John surgery to repair his torn ulnar collateral ligament. And just like, Torres&#8217; 2017 stint with the RailRiders is over.</p><p>The 20-year-old is expected to be ready for spring training.</p><p>&#8220;I feel sad because I want to play every day, but injuries happen,&#8221; Torres said, who was still waiting to hear the results. &#8220;My arm is a little bit sore. I have a little bit of pain, but I&#8217;ll take care of my arm every day and I&#8217;ll come back soon.</p><p>&#8220;The first day was a lot of pain, but now, two days later, it&#8217;s not perfect, but I have a little bit (of pain.)&#8221;</p><p>The injury came Saturday when the infielder was sliding into home plate, attempting to score on a Mark Payton single to shallow right field. Sliding feet first, Torres reached out with his left arm to tag home plate and was met by Buffalo Bisons catcher Raffy Lopez. He laid there in the batter&#8217;s box in pain after the play ended.</p><p>&#8220;The slide was so hard and (when) the catcher tagged me I felt a lot of pain, but after &#8230; the pain went down,&#8221; Torres said.</p><p>When RailRiders manager Al Pedrique saw Torres&#8217; slide live, he didn&#8217;t think it would be a &#8220;major&#8221; injury. It wasn&#8217;t until he went back and watched the video that he thought the prognosis could be troublesome for the infielder.</p><p>&#8220;The throw was on the third base side and the catcher went after the throw and then he blocked the plate,&#8221; Pedrique said of the play. &#8220;Obviously the type of slide he did and then the catcher tagging on top of his elbow and the way he reacted was a concern that he did something wrong. When he came out of the game I talked to him he was pretty sore, no swelling at all, but he was pretty sensitive to the area. Any type of slide like that at home plate in a situation like that is a concern.&#8221;</p><p>Pedrique said the conversation between himself and Torres after the pair learned that the infielder would need Tommy John surgery was a tough one. Torres almost came to tears, according to his manager.</p><p>&#8220;He&#8217;s a kid that loves to play the game,&#8221; Pedrique said. &#8220;He said it hurts a lot because he&#8217;s so close to the big leagues, probably a phone call away, and I told him, &#8216;You know what, I understand what you&#8217;re feeling about the whole thing, but you&#8217;re only 20 years old. I&#8217;m glad they&#8217;re going to take care of this sooner rather than later. Being young and healthy, hopefully you&#8217;ll be able to recover quick.&#8217; Definitely, he was devastated about the news. Very disappointed.&#8221;</p><p>Torres came back with the team Sunday night and left for New York Monday morning.</p><p>The Yankees top prospect said he expects to keep the brace on for six more days. The date for Torres&#8217; Tommy John surgery has yet to be determined.</p><p>&#8220;My advice to him was to stay positive,&#8221; Pedrique said. &#8220;He&#8217;ll have plenty of time to get ready and be ready for spring training. I told him, &#8216;You are going to have days you&#8217;re going to feel bad about the whole thing. Just do the best you can to stay one day at a time. Once the surgery is done, you just have to be responsible and make sure you&#8217;re consistent with your rehab.&#8217;&#8221;</p><p>With Torres done for the season, Yankees No. 12 prospect, according to Baseball America, Miguel Andujar has been promoted from Double-A Trenton. The third baseman joins the RailRiders with a .312 batting average, seven home runs and an Eastern League-high 52 RBI.</p><p>&#8220;This is a kid who had a lot of talent,&#8221; Pedrique said. &#8220;Defensively, he was getting a lot better at third base with balls back-hand side. Offensively, he was having a great year. I think he&#8217;s at 51, 52 RBI over in Double-A and we&#8217;re not even halfway there. It&#8217;s nice to have him in the club. He&#8217;s a very exciting player. He plays hard, has a lot of fun. I&#8217;m sure he&#8217;s going to help us a lot.&#8221;</p><style>
