Decision next month on controversial Dorrance development

<p>YATESVILLE &#8212; The Pittston Area School District is aiming to add another piece of heavy equipment through a gaming grant.</p><p>This week, the school board approved a plan for Yatesville Borough to sponsor an application for a Local Share Account grant. LSA grants are funded by gambling revenue.</p><p>Pittston Superintendent Kevin Booth explained the district can&#8217;t apply for the grant on its own, so it is partnering with Yatesville.</p><p>&#8220;Technically, the school district doesn&#8217;t get funds through the gaming. It all has to go through municipalities,&#8221; Booth said. &#8220;So we work in conjunction with Yatesville. Yatesville actually gets the money, but we work in partnership with them. All that equipment is stored here.&#8221;</p><p>This will be the third year in a row the district and the borough have partnered for the grant &#8212; last year&#8217;s funds were used to purchase a backhoe, while funds obtained the year before were used to build the pole barn that now stands near Stout Street on Pittston Area&#8217;s campus.</p><p>This year, the two entities plan to purchase a Bobcat skid-steer loader, a small vehicle with lift arms that can be outfitted with a variety of attachments. Booth said the goal is to be well-equipped for large snow-removal jobs like the one this past March.</p><p>&#8220;The backhoe came in great help during the recent blizzard,&#8221; Booth said. &#8220;It&#8217;s mainly for snow removal, but obviously with a Bobcat or a backhoe, you&#8217;re going to be able to use it for various projects we might have.&#8221;</p><p>Booth estimated the cost of the Bobcat at $40,000. When asked what percentage of the cost will come from the district, Booth said its end of the bargain amounts to storage and sharing.</p><p>&#8220;There really is no percentage; if Yatesville needs to use the backhoe, if they have a project, they come and use it,&#8221; Booth said.</p><p>In other business:</p><p>&#8226; The district retained Albert B. Melone Co.&#8217;s business consulting services through the 2019-20 school year.</p><style>
