United Way of Wyoming Valley marks 50,000th book through Parton library

<p>DALLAS TWP. &#8212; Dallas School District residents can get detailed information on &#8212; and ask questions about &#8212; the proposed Intermediate Center during a state-required Act 34 public hearing at 7 p.m. Monday at the high school.</p><p>The hearing includes a booklet outlining reasons for constructing the new building, planned to sit next to Wycallis Elementary, and a breakdown of the estimated $23 million price tag.</p><p>The Act 34 booklet notes the primary impetus for the new building is the state of Dallas Elementary School, built in 1972 as a temporary structure to handle a surge of enrollment following the flooding in the Wyoming Valley from Hurricane Agnes.</p><p>Dallas Elementary was renovated in 1977 and expanded in 1990 and 1997, but a 2016 study calculated needed upgrades would cost $11.4 million.</p><p>The district then considered seven options for possible construction, renovation, addition and realignment of its four schools. The board ultimately opted for the last option: maintaining Wycallis; building the new school next to it; and demolishing Dallas Elementary to make room for fields that now stand where the new school would rise.</p><p>Currently, both Wycallis and Dallas Elementary house students from kindergarten through fifth grade. Once construction is complete, the grades would be realigned, with Wycallis housing K-2 and the Intermediate School housing grades 3-5.</p><p>The booklet spells out the number of rooms and square footage for the administrative wing, classrooms and common areas such as the cafeteria and gymnasium:</p><p>&#8226; The administrative/student services area would include a waiting space, reception space, mail room, principal office that can double as a small conference room, a conference room, a room for copiers and printers, the computer server room, and a health suite including a nurse&#8217;s office and exam room.</p><p>&#8226; There would be 27 regular classrooms &#8212; each 825 square feet &#8212; meant to hold up to 24 students; four special education classrooms to hold 15 students each; three small group instruction rooms; and a support classroom of 788 square feet for large group instruction.</p><p>&#8226; The 2,272 square-foot cafeteria will double as a lobby for the gym when events are held there. The gym itself will be 8,190 square feet that can be divided into smaller spaces, with a wall that can be folded back to reveal a stage.</p><p>&#8226; There will also be a 2,122 square-foot media center/library; a room for art and a room for music classes; and a faculty dining room adjacent to the cafeteria.</p><p>The meeting agenda includes a question-and-answer session.
