Fast start propels Berwick to dominant win over Crestwood

<p style="text-align: left;">WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Meyers quarterback Janssen Wilborn was a problem-solver Friday night.</p><p style="text-align: left;">First-and-27? Run for a 92-yard touchdown. Fourth-and-20? Throw a 28-yard touchdown pass.</p><p style="text-align: left;">Those scores, along with a 14-yard TD run by Wilborn, all came in Meyers&#8217; productive second quarter as the Mohawks defeated Nanticoke 26-7 in a battle for first place in Division 3A-A of the Wyoming Valley Conference.</p><p style="text-align: left;">Both teams are now 3-1.</p><p style="text-align: left;">&#8220;Like I said before, he&#8217;s electrifying,&#8221; Meyers coach Jeff Labatch said. &#8220;He can make plays and anytime he can score.&#8221;</p><p style="text-align: left;">Wilborn finished with 164 yards rushing on 18 carries. He passed for 181 more, connecting on 11 of 19 attempts including the 28-yard screen pass to Hood that gave Meyers a 26-0 lead going into halftime.</p><p style="text-align: left;">&#8220;I definitely think this is a win we can build on,&#8221; Wilborn said, &#8220;but we have to start Monday. We have a game next week.&#8221;</p><p style="text-align: left;">Not all was smooth for the Mohawks, especially in the second half. After piling up 352 yards in the first half, they added just 98 more in the final two quarters. Penalties were numerous, with 14 in all for 133 yards.</p><p style="text-align: left;">&#8220;We kind of got lethargic I guess,&#8221; Labatch said. &#8220;And we told them at halftime (Nanticoke) is a great team and we put up a bunch on them last year, and they&#8217;re capable of putting up a bunch on us in a half.&#8221;</p><p style="text-align: left;">Nanticoke steered most of the second half with 12 first downs and running back Eric Jeffries running for 115 of his game-high 164 rushing yards. Yet the Trojans managed just one score &#8212; a 44-yard pass from Colby Butczynski to Darren Boseman with 4:03 to play.</p><p style="text-align: left;">&#8220;They just loaded the box on us a little bit (in the first half),&#8221; Nanticoke coach Ron Bruza said. &#8220;We weren&#8217;t really getting off the ball well. They confused us a little bit up front, but it&#8217;s everything we&#8217;ll clean up and fix.&#8221;</p><p style="text-align: left;">Meyers scored on its second possession as Wilborn hit Reese Patronick for gains of 25 and 24 yards before Nazir Dunell raced around the right side for a 41-yard score. Wilborn made it 13-0 early in the second quarter on a 14-yard run where he peeked right then darted left for the TD.</p><p style="text-align: left;">The Mohawks appeared in bad shape after consecutive penalties set up a first-and-27 from their 8-yard line. Wilborn, though, sliced through the defense for a 92-yard scoring run.</p><p style="text-align: left;">Again, penalties plagued Meyers on its next possession, resulting in a fourth-and-20 from the Nanticoke 28. Hood, though, took a quick pass from Wilborn and scored on the next play.</p><p style="text-align: left;">&#8220;That&#8217;s the difference when you have athletes. They&#8217;re all over the field for them,&#8221; Bruza said. &#8220;They kept spreading us out and creating mismatch issues.&#8221;</p><p style="text-align: left;">Meyers will be back on its home turf of Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium for the next four weeks, but will be the visiting team next Saturday afternoon against Holy Redeemer (1-3).
