<p>A talented Las Vegas tattoo artist tried to take down the Ink Master herself, but wasn&#8217;t quite up to the task.</p><p>Season 8 winner of Spike&#8217;s &#8220;Ink Master&#8221; and local tattoo diva, Ryan Ashley Malarkey, made her debut Tuesday night on &#8220;Ink Master: Angels.&#8221; The show is a spin-off series of &#8220;Ink Master.&#8221;</p><p>Malarkey made history when she became the first female to win the competition and become the &#8220;Ink Master&#8221; last year. She is a native of Sweet Valley, resides in Shavertown, and co-owns The Strange &amp; Unusual Oddities Parlor and tattoo studio in Kingston.</p><p>On &#8220;Ink Master: Angels,&#8221; Malarkey has the role of a co-host. She will be traveling the country with Kelly Doty, Gia Rose, and Nikki Simpson &#8212; three of her former competitors &#8212; on the quest to find and showcase some of America&#8217;s best tattoo artists. The artists will be competing against each other and against an &#8220;Angel&#8221; of their choice each week &#8212; all in the hope of getting a spot on season 10 of &#8220;Ink Master.&#8221;</p><p>Tuesday night&#8217;s series premiere started off in Las Vegas. The Angels selected three local artists to compete against each other: Tone Chingon, Carrie Cameron, and Infamous Jones. In the first round, the artists had two hours to complete any tattoo of their choice. Chingon was safe from elimination because his tattoo won the challenge. Jones, meanwhile, was eliminated. Chingon and Cameron then moved on to round two, where they had to complete a &#8220;Chicano-style&#8221; tattoo. Since Chingon won the first round, he was allowed to pick the theme for round two. He described his signature style as Chicano, using Mexican-American imagery and storytelling.</p><p>Chingon beat Cameron in round two and then was instructed to pick one of the Angels to compete against in a six-hour-long tattoo competition, known as the &#8220;Angel Face-off.&#8221; Before making his choice, he praised all the angels as good artists, but ended up picking Malarkey to compete against.</p><p>Malarkey appeared to be flattered but very ready for the challenge.</p><p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know if he knows what&#8217;s coming for him,&#8221; she said of Chingon.</p><p>Both Malarkey and Chingon met with the person they would be tattooing, hearing their life story to come up with the best-suited tattoo for them. For her client, Jason, Malarkey sketched a &#8220;dark decaying skull shifting into a face&#8221; to represent his past as a gambler and his recovery.</p><p>&#8220;The style of the tattoo is what I love to do,&#8221; she said.</p><p>The other Angels, competitors Cameron and Jones, and audience members voted for either Malarkey or Chingon as the winner of the face-off.</p><p>&#8220;Ryan is amazing,&#8221; said one audience member, praising the clean lines and beautiful imagery of her design.</p><p>When critiquing Malarkey&#8217;s tattoo, fellow co-host Doty said it was a little too busy in the background. &#8220;It&#8217;s not as readable as I want it to be.&#8221;</p><p>However, toward the end of the program, she also could not deny Malarkey&#8217;s skill. &#8220;If anybody knows how to put in a beautiful black and gray tattoo, it&#8217;s Ryan,&#8221; observed Doty.</p><p>When the time came to pick the winner, Cameron and Jones voted for Malarkey while the audience voted for Chingon. The deciding factor was the other Angels&#8217; vote &#8212; all three went for Malarkey, making her the winner.</p><p>&#8220;Ink Master: Angels&#8221; airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on Spike.</p><style>
