NFL players, owners hold ‘constructive’ talks on issues

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Local lawmakers announced Tuesday that both the city of Wilkes-Barre and Luzerne County have received millions of dollars in federal funding for various housing initiatives.</p><p>The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded $1,383,671 to the city and $3,784,927 to the county through the Community Development Block Grant program, which facilitates grants annually to state and local branches of government to provide affordable housing for low and middle-income individuals. HUD also awarded an additional $595,578 to the county and $245,898 to the city courtesy of the Home Investment Partnerships Program. HOME provides funding to states, cities, and municipalities often in collaboration with local non-profit organizations to finance building, buying, and renovating homes for low-income housing seekers to rent or buy.</p><p>&#8220;Ensuring Northeastern Pennsylvanians have access to safe, affordable housing is a priority of mine,&#8221; said Congressman Matt Cartwright in a statement. &#8221; These grants are an investment in our community. They fund programs that meet the needs and priorities of our neighborhoods, remove blight, and attract businesses.&#8221;</p><p>Congressman Lou Barletta announced that the county has received a $341,048 subsidy for the creation and operation of more shelters for homeless individuals and families through the Emergency Solutions Grant.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s critical that the people of Pennsylvania have a voice in Washington,&#8221; he said in a statement. &#8220;These funds will provide a lifeline to families and communities and inject economic development into the state.&#8221;</p><style>
