HUD awards Luzerne County over $6 million in grants for affordable housing

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Help is often just a phone call away for Fire Chief Jay Delaney.</p><p>Be it labor, operational or any other issue that he has to deal with in the Wilkes-Barre City Fire Department, he can check in with others at the Pennsylvania Career Fire Chiefs Association.</p><p>Now, they might be calling him first since he&#8217;s been voted president of the 40-member association that includes Allentown, Erie, Harrisburg, Hazleton, Pittston, Plains Township, Scranton and York.</p><p>Delaney, 59, started in the city as a paramedic in 1981, became a firefighter in 1993 and has been chief since 2009. He was elected to the two-year post earlier this month when the association met in Erie at the Pennsylvania Municipal League Summit.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s pivotal in my career. For me, it&#8217;s an honor and a privilege to serve as president. All of those folks have been my mentors,&#8221; Delaney said Tuesday.</p><p>He previously held the post of vice president for two, two-year terms with the association that works to promote the professional advancement of the fire service and represent the interests of career and combination departments throughout the state.</p><p>&#8220;I sit here in my office and certainly I don&#8217;t have all the answers. But I can get the answers,&#8221; Delaney said.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s reassuring to me when I have a really tough labor issue or operational issue I can pick up the phone,&#8221; he added.</p><p>The chiefs deal with the same issues and can discuss them individually or as a group when the association meets three times a year. Wilkes-Barre hosted the association in May 2016.</p><p>The group also works to develop legislation and policy for elected officials on matters that impact fire service.</p><p>&#8220;We found that there&#8217;s power in numbers,&#8221; Delaney said.</p><style>
