WYOMING &#8212; This was the game that Cassidy Eckert and Lydia Traugh had been waiting for, for four years.Berwick&#8217;s senior tandem put the Bulldogs back into the district semis for the first time since 2013. The fifth-seeded Bulldogs upended Wyoming Area for a 3-1 victory Thursday in the District 2 Class 2A girls soccer quarterfinal.Berwick will face defending district champion Lake-Lehman on Saturday with a PIAA playoff berth on the line. The top-seeded Black Knights beat No. 9 Meyers 10-0 in their quarterfinal.Eckert scored the Bulldogs&#8217; first two goals. Traugh finished with a goal and an assist.&#8220;I&#8217;m very happy for these two seniors,&#8221; Berwick coach Paul DiPippa said. &#8220;They work so well together. I&#8217;m happy that they were to answer to the call today. For as good as they&#8217;ve been for their career, they&#8217;ve been waiting to score a big win at this type of stage.&#8221;Berwick recovered from giving up a goal in the early minutes.Wyoming Area wasted no time by striking in the fifth minute on a double-assisted play. Tierney Porfirio sent a ball from the defense to Amanda McCormick. McCormick found Caitlin McDonough, who beat the keeper for an early 1-0 lead.&#8220;We&#8217;re starting five freshmen,&#8221; DiPippa said. &#8220;It was a lot of nerves. Our girls didn&#8217;t know what to expect. But we&#8217;ve got some really good seniors that took charge of this game. They didn&#8217;t want the season to end. It wasn&#8217;t the prettiest of games for us but we gutted it out.&#8221;Eckert evened the score at one apiece in the 19th minute. Traugh fed Eckert on a give-and-go that enabled her to put a shot past the goalkeeper.Berwick used a second-half adjustment to script the game-winning goal. The Wyoming Area goalkeeper cleared a ball that was met by Berwick defender Katie Starr just short of midfield. Starr booted the ball back to the keeper, and Eckert beat the keeper to the ball and delivered it into the net to put Berwick ahead in the 45th minute.&#8220;We saw some gaps in their formation,&#8221; DiPippa said. &#8220;So, at halftime, we thought that if our outside backs were involved in the attack that maybe we could sneak in a goal.&#8221;Wyoming Area controlled much of the possession in the second half, as Berwick played back and relied on its defense to keep the ball away from the keeper.Traugh ended Wyoming Area&#8217;s hopes at reaching the first fall soccer semifinal in school history in the 76th minute. Traugh won a ball out of scrum, made a move on a defender, and scored from 10 yards.Wyoming Area, who loses just one senior from its roster, was without Erica Gallagher to injury.The Warriors nearly had a chance in the 31st minute when Carley Yuhas sent a long ball to Aleah Kranson. She cut the defender and took a chance at a tight angle but was slapped away by the Berwick keeper Jayden Michael. The Warriors&#8217; Abby Yatsko twice save a potential goal in the 38th minute when she stabbed the ball from Traugh on a breakaway chance.Lake-Lehman 10, Meyers 0Lake-Lehman advances to the District 2 2A semifinal round after shutting out Meyers.Mackenzie Love scored four goals while Madison Brdaric added two goals for the Black Knights. Stephanie Ayers and Emma Stroud made a combined three saves for the shutout.Meyers&#8217; Victoria Collum made nine saves in goal.DISTRICT 2 3A TOURNAMENTCrestwood 3, Wallenpaupack 0Crestwood defeated Wallenpaupack to secure a spot in the Division 2 3A semifinals.Sam Brumagin, Melissa Herrera and Allie Stover contributed one goal each while Cortney Dushanko made 10 saves for the shutout.Dallas 8, Coughlin 2Dallas advances to the District 2 3A semifinals with the win against Coughlin.The Mountaineers&#8217; Ally Francis shot a hat trick and assisted two goals, while Sam Mazula and Sydney Fulton contributed two goals apiece.
