Girls Soccer: Crestwood’s season ends with PK loss to Abington Heights

LEHMAN TWP. &#8212; The Lake-Lehman girls soccer team works on penalty kicks at just about every practice and put in extra time on them Monday.That time paid off with the Black Knights&#8217; District 2 Class 2A title defense on the line.Mackenzie Love scored in both regulation and the penalty kick shootout while freshman Emma Stroud stopped Montrose&#8217;s last two shootout attempts to lead Lake-Lehman to a successful title defense on its own field with a 4-3 victory.The Black Knights won the penalty kick shootout 4-2 without the scheduled fifth attempt being necessary for either team, after the teams went through both overtimes locked in a 2-2 tie.&#8220;Pretty much every day, we usually end our practice with PKs, either playing around or seriousness,&#8221; Lake-Lehman coach Kelly Adamshick said. &#8220;(Monday) was more serious than most days.&#8221;There were times when it hardly looked as if penalty kicks would be necessary.Kyra Apaliski&#8217;s goal from a tough angle near the right corner gave top-seeded Lake-Lehman, a state semifinalist a year ago, a 3-1 lead with 9:31 left.Montrose rallied on two goals by Brianna Spence, including a direct kick from more than 30 yards out into the upper corner with just two seconds left. Spence placed the tying shot perfectly, though hurried to beat the clock, from near the left sideline, 20 yards from the end line.Lake-Lehman, which had taken the first eight shots of the second half, including Love&#8217;s tie-breaking goal, took all eight shots in the first overtime while putting constant pressure on the Meteors.After a tense second overtime in which Montrose had slight advantages in possession, shots (4-3) and corner kicks (2-1), the teams prepared for penalty kicks.Stroud had faced individual penalty kicks before, but not a shootout situation.&#8220;Very impressive,&#8221; Adamshick said. &#8220;She&#8217;s a ninth-grader, but she&#8217;s a very experienced travel player and she definitely stepped up for us in the PKs.&#8221;The first two players from each team &#8211; Abby Paczewski and Chloe Weaver for Lake-Lehman and Madison Gilhool and Spence for Montrose &#8211; made their kicks.Love went low to the left side to make Lake-Lehman 3-for-3.That&#8217;s when Stroud got her hands up in front of her face to stop a shot by Adrianna Scarfallato.After Amanda Ayers crossed up Montrose goalie Katie Puterbaugh for the fourth straight successful Lake-Lehman shot, Stroud finished off the title by reaching up to catch a Gabby Davis shot.&#8220;It&#8217;s just reflexes,&#8221; Stroud said. &#8220;As soon as you see where the ball goes, you just react.&#8221;Stroud set off a reaction from the Lake-Lehman bench. Her save clinched the win and brought her teammates running onto the field in celebration.Lake-Lehman never trailed in the game, but third-seeded Montrose fought back well.After Hallie Jenkins put Lake-Lehman ahead midway through the first half, Gilhool tied the game less than three minutes later.When Love and Apaliski scored off assists from Weaver and Paczewski, Montrose needed just one minute to cut into the two-goal deficit.
