Lake-Lehman wins district girls soccer title on penalty kicks

<p>WRIGHT TWP. &#8212; On a frighteningly chilly night, the Wyoming Seminary field hockey team went knocking door to door, looking for some District 2 treats.</p><p>Kelsey Reznick went as Wonder Woman.</p><p>Alex Wesneski was Supergirl.</p><p>And together, they went knocking on doors until they found what they wanted.</p><p>Reznick scored the first goal Tuesday, Wesneski added the second and Wyoming Seminary broke a six-year title curse, winning its first District 2 crown since 2011 by dethroning Lake-Lehman as the Class A champion with a 2-0 victory at frigid Crestwood High School.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s amazing,&#8221; said Reznick, a junior who wasn&#8217;t even on the team when Sem beat Crestwood 1-0 to win the 2011 District 2 Class 2A title, nor when the Blue Knights dropped the 2013 District 2 championship game to Crestwood, 2-0. &#8220;We haven&#8217;t been to this (district title) game for four years. To finally get here, and win it &#8230; amazing. It puts us in great position for states.</p><p>&#8220;And we&#8217;re planning on going far in that tournament.&#8221;</p><p>All because the 17-0 Blue Knights went over the top to reach the start of next week&#8217;s PIAA playoffs as the top seed from District 2, while Lehman fell to 14-3 and enters states as the second seed from District 2.</p><p>With a wealth of high-powered scoring stars flooding the field on both sides, defenses kept draining opportunities &#8212; to the point where Lake-Lehman suffered only its second shutout loss of the season.</p><p>The diving temperatures that dipped below 40 degrees with a light but biting wind may have had an effect on the action.</p><p>&#8220;It was a little bit of a shock at first, trying to get used to it,&#8221; Reznick said of the weather, which was a drastic change from the 60-plus-degree temperatures both teams played in through the season and up to the district title game. &#8220;But when you&#8217;re playing, you don&#8217;t really feel it.&#8221;</p><p>Both offenses, though, felt some mounting frustration.</p><p>Wyoming Seminary allowed just three shots on goal through the entire game, and Lake-Lehman standout goalie Alicia Galasso made a game-high 13 saves as scoring chances started becoming scarce.</p><p>Then Reznick turned into a superhero.</p><p>With the ball sitting deep in the circle and 21:34 to play, Reznick leaped over a pile of players, dove head-first and reached out her stick to poke the game&#8217;s first score across the goal line.</p><p>&#8220;Just ball-hungry,&#8221; Reznick shrugged. &#8220;You see it, you&#8217;ve just got to do it and put it in. You&#8217;ve got to be aggressive when you&#8217;re playing this game.&#8221;</p><p>It was the first goal allowed by Lehman in nine straight games, including two 1-0 victories in two district playoff battles.</p><p>&#8220;It was going to take that kind of effort for either team to score, to be honest,&#8221; Wyoming Seminary coach Karen Klassner said. &#8220;We had so many opportunities to score.</p><p>&#8220;It was going to take a superhuman effort to put the ball in the cage.&#8221;</p><p>The mad dash that marked the game&#8217;s first goal had the Blue Knights awed with admiration.</p><p>&#8220;Kelsey was crazy,&#8221; laughed Wesneski. &#8220;One second, she was behind me. I looked up and she was scoring that goal. I don&#8217;t know how she did it, she went so fast.&#8221;</p><p>Moments before that go-ahead shot, Lake-Lehman&#8217;s Mikayla Adams stepped into the cage and lifted her stick to bat down a high shot &#8212; leaving the Blue Knights wondering if they&#8217;d ever crack the cage and making Reznick&#8217;s goal feel like relief.</p><p>&#8220;The only way we were going to win was to start scoring. She stepped up,&#8221; Klassner said of Reznick. &#8220;I didn&#8217;t see it (the first goal), there were a lot of players in front. All I did was hear it hit the back.</p><p>&#8220;That&#8217;s a great sound when the game&#8217;s tied.&#8221;</p><p>Wesneski sounded Sem&#8217;s celebration with 6:55 to play, when she took a feed from Julia Christian and ripped home the Blue Knights&#8217; second goal to pretty much douse Lehman&#8217;s comeback hopes.</p><p>&#8220;Julia shot it, I saw it bouncing,&#8221; Wesneski said. &#8220;I knew I was the only one who was going to stop it. I looked around and there was nobody else around me. It was a wonderful shot and great teamwork.&#8221;</p><p>And it helped put the Blue Knights back in state play.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s just a great, great feeling,&#8221; Wesneski said. &#8220;We&#8217;ve been working so hard for this. Ever since day one, we said we wanted that district championship.&#8221;</p><p>To Sem, it was the ultimate treat.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m thrilled for the kids,&#8221; Klassner said. &#8220;It&#8217;s great. I felt both teams played very well. Jean (Lake-Lehman coach Lipski) and I were joking around, saying, &#8216;Wouldn&#8217;t it be nice if we played each other again in the state championship?&#8217; &#8220;</p><p><strong>CLASS 2A FINALS</strong></p><p><strong>Wyoming Valley West 2,</strong></p><p><strong>Crestwood 0</strong></p><p>Karoline Stelma and Foto Tsioles both scored, lifting the Spartans to their second straight District 2 Class 2A championship with a victory over Crestwood in the title game at Nesbitt Field.</p><p>Both teams will advance to next week&#8217;s PIAA Class 2A playoffs.</p><p>Stelma took a pass from Callie Edwards and registered the first goal just 3:07 into the game.</p><p>Valley West seemed content to turn the night into a defensive battle from there. And why not?</p><p>The Spartans limited Crestwood to just one shot on goal, and Nikki Hartzel saved it.</p><p>Tsioles took no chances, though.</p><p>She turned an assist from Irelynd Sullivan into Valley West&#8217;s second goal with 20:23 remaining, lifting the Spartans into state play for the second straight season.</p><p>Valley West, now 15-1, will face the No. 3 seed from District 1 when the PIAA Class 2A playoff tournament opens Nov. 7.
