Pennsylvania offers new license plate honoring PA National Guard

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; A West Pittston man learned Friday when he&#8217;ll be standing trial for allegedly having sex with an underage girl.</p><p>Mendel Fernandes, 39, is facing charges of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, statutory sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault and corruption of minors.</p><p>On Friday, Luzerne County Judge David W. Lupas set Fernandes&#8217; trial date for May 14.</p><p>Police accuse him of carrying on a sexual relationship with an Exeter teen from the time she was 13 until last October, when she was 15.</p><p>Fernandes allegedly had sex with the girl in numerous locations, exchanged nude photos with her and filmed their sex acts. Police say he admitted to having sex with the girl, but denied filming it.</p><p>In January, Lupas sentenced Fernandes to 50 to 100 months &#8212; or four years and two months to eight years and four months &#8212; in state prison for possessing a firearm as a felon.</p><p>Fernandes had been previously serving a three-year stint in the intermediate punishment program, or IPP, but Lupas re-sentenced him after prosecutors argued the new charges constituted a violation of the terms of his sentence.</p><p>Fernandes was remanded to the Camp Hill state prison.</p><style>
