MOOSIC &#8212; Bobby Mitchell wanted to see some shutdown innings from Chance Adams Thursday night.If the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders had a big inning offensively &#8212; like when they put up four runs in the bottom of the fourth against the Durham Bulls &#8212; Mitchell wanted the 23-year-old to respond with his a dominant inning of his own.Adams was lights out for the first four frames, but once he got the lead, he collapsed. Adams served up four runs in the fifth, the next time he took the mound. The RailRiders weren&#8217;t able to recover as Durham won 5-4.&#8220;We&#8217;ve talked about shutdown innings. Those are the most important innings, really,&#8221; Mitchell said. &#8220;When you&#8217;re trying to shut a team down and keep the momentum after you score four, and he&#8217;s had trouble with that obviously, and tonight he did the same thing. If we get away with one or two runs, we win the ball game.&#8221;If it wasn&#8217;t for the four-run frame, Adams would have made out just fine.The right-hander struck out nine batters and only gave up six hits. But it was the four walks that also killed him.Three of Adams&#8217; early free passes cost him pitches. Then, when he was in the fifth inning and nearing 100 pitches, he walked Brandon Snyder with two outs on six pitches, and even had gotten the first baseman in a 2-2 hole. Justin Williams knocked Snyder home in the very next at-bat with a two-out, three-run blast for the Bulls (33-25).&#8220;He was throwing the ball pretty well. He had the changeup working pretty good and the slider was working,&#8221; RailRiders catcher Kyle Higashioka said. &#8220;I think just toward the end, maybe he was a little fatigued. He was getting up there toward 100 pitches, but we were really battling. Worked some tough at-bats, a couple 3-2, and the guy just clipped a fastball, just good enough to get it over that left field wall.&#8221;Billy McKinney continued on his tear.After homering in Wednesday&#8217;s loss, the RailRiders outfielder sent another bomb over the wall Thursday. McKinney put Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (26-32) on the board with a three-run shot over the wall in right field in the fourth inning.He finished 2-for-3 with the home run, a walk, run scored and three RBI.&#8220;He had great at-bats. He really did,&#8221; Mitchell said. &#8220;He had outstanding at-bats the whole night. His walk was really good. Home run swing was really good. He was just a little bit tardy on the ball he hit down the left field line, but he was with two strikes and he tried to battle. He&#8217;s the one guy out there swinging the bat well and has a two-strike approach, and it&#8217;s really helping.&#8221;Both Mitchell and third baseman Brandon Drury were ejected for the first time Thursday night.Drury struck out looking to end the third inning, tossed his bat and was immediately ejected. Mitchell came down from his post as the third-base coach and was tossed after a short conversation with home-plate umpire Shane Livensparger.&#8220;I know why he got thrown out, because he flipped the bat. But I&#8217;m going to go up there and protect him,&#8221; Mitchell said. &#8220;I thought there was a strike that we threw that was a ball the inning before. He called it low and I didn&#8217;t think it was low.&#8220;I pretty much have to protect my player and go up there &#8212; and I want to anyway &#8212; and I want to make sure that he knew why I was there, and he asked me if I was arguing balls and strikes. I mean, that&#8217;s pretty much why I&#8217;m there, you know?
