Dr. Edwards Church to celebrate 150th anniversary Oct. 28

<p>National POW/MIA Recognition Day was celebrated Friday, Sept. 21.</p><p>In honor of these heroes, Newport Township American Legion Auxiliary Unit 539, in conjunction with the Post, held a one-mile &#8220;Walk of Warriors&#8221; in Glen Lyon on Saturday, Sept. 22. The group, escorted by the Newport Township police cruiser driven by Officer Blake Brown with traffic control provided by the township fire police, journeyed from the St. Nicholas Church parking lot on the east side of Glen Lyon to the American Legion post home on the west side.</p><p>A welcome address was given by Auxiliary President Barb Meyers followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, the solemn POW/MIA ceremony performed by veterans and auxiliary members Lorrie Materewiz and Leanne Wenner, culminating in a social and luncheon for the participants.</p><p>All funds raised were donated to the National League of POW/MIA Families headquarters in Falls Church, Va. whose sole mission is the accounting, location and repatriation of POWs/MIAs from the Vietnam War. Pennsylvania still has 90 names on that list.</p><p>Unit and Post 5390 extends its appreciation to walkers, township police and fire police, George Kubasik for his videography, St. Nicholas Church personnel, Old Newport Decal and Kyle Pegarella.</p><style>
