Flavor of the Week: Golden Tate trade turns Carson Wentz back into fantasy star

<p>SCRANTON &#8212; The book closed Saturday afternoon on GAR&#8217;s 93-year football history.</p><p>Like its Wilkes-Barre city brethren Coughlin and Meyers, it was slammed shut.</p><p>Top-seeded Scranton Prep scored on its first six possessions and then decided that was enough as the Cavaliers defeated one-win GAR 42-7 in a District 2 Class 3A quarterfinal game at Scranton Memorial Stadium.</p><p>Prep (10-1) will host Western Wayne (6-5) at 1 p.m. Saturday in the semifinals.</p><p>GAR finished its final season of football at 1-10. The school will merge its athletic programs with Coughlin and Meyers for the 2019-20 school year under the name Wilkes-Barre Area Wolfpack.</p><p>Coughlin ended its 0-10 season last week with a 55-7 loss to Berwick. Meyers finished 7-4 after losing to Western Wayne 50-6 in a quarterfinal game Friday night.</p><p>&#8220;Our kids had nothing to lose today,&#8221; said an emotional GAR coach Paul Wiedlich Jr. &#8220;They made the Heights proud, they made their families proud, they made the GAR community proud. They don&#8217;t need to hang their heads at all. They left it on the field today.&#8221;</p><p>Sophomore running back Noah Taylor epitomized that when he scored the final touchdown in school history on a 6-yard run with 4:23 left in the fourth quarter.</p><p>On the play prior, Taylor was stuffed at the line and came out of the pile wiggling his shoulders as if he was injured. Obviously he was because after the TD he had his jersey and shoulder pads stripped off and had his upper back examined. He didn&#8217;t return.</p><p>GAR opened strongly as Kashawn Wade recovered an onside kick to start the game. The Grenadiers drove to the Prep 30-yard line until turning over the ball on downs. On their second possession, Taylor broke off a 35-yard run and Malachai Williams made a diving 30-yard catch to put the ball at the Prep 15. The Grenadiers eventually turned over the ball on downs again.</p><p>Even if GAR had scored, it probably wouldn&#8217;t have mattered.</p><p>The defense couldn&#8217;t stop Prep and in particular running back Tucker Johnson. Johnson finished the Cavaliers&#8217; first three possessions with touchdown runs of 55 , 56 and 34 yards. He had 188 yards on six carries in the first quarter and carried one more time the rest of the game.</p><p>A couple of second-quarter touchdown passes by Leo O&#8217;Boyle and an 18-yard TD run by Ben Jones bumped the lead to 42-0 at halftime. Prep had a final chance to score before the break, but took a knee at the GAR 45 with 42 seconds left.</p><p>&#8220;The most important thing was we got guys in, got them out,&#8221; Prep coach Terry Gallagher said. &#8220;They&#8217;re healthy and hopefully we&#8217;re ready to roll.&#8221;</p><p>The final two quarters were reduced to 10 minutes and with a running clock due to the 35-point mercy rule. Prep had a chance to punch in one more score when Nick Terrery returned an interception &#8212; Prep&#8217;s third of the game &#8212; 51 yards to the GAR 3 with two minutes left. Instead, the Cavaliers used a couple kneel-downs to run out the clock.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s sad, you know what I mean, growing up with this,&#8221; said Wiedlich, a GAR grad and former player. &#8220;GAR, living a block from the high school for 35 years. It&#8217;s sad, but with life there&#8217;s change and we have to adapt and become one unified district. We look to move forward.</p><p>&#8220;Unfortunately, this is the end of an era for GAR football and there&#8217;s nothing much more we can do.
