West Wyoming boy who once feared police gets birthday surprise from officers

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; With a not-guilty plea entered, a trial date has been set for a Newport Township woman accused of fleeing the scene after fatally striking a man on the Sans Souci Parkway with her vehicle.</p><p>Lisa Marie Yurkin, 52, is accused of striking Hanover Township&#8217;s Jason Filip, 36, on Feb. 24 and then driving away. Filip died at the scene.</p><p>Yurkin is facing a single count of accidents involving death, a second-degree felony.</p><p>She appeared before Luzerne County Judge Michael T. Vough on Thursday, where she entered a plea of not guilty. Vough set a trial date for Feb. 11, 2019.</p><p>According to police, Filip was at a cancer benefit for a friend that night in Hanover Township, before going to the Six Strings Saloon on the Sans Souci at about 9:30.</p><p>Bartenders said Filip had about three beers before leaving two hours later.</p><p>Meanwhile, Yurkin was traveling south on the Sans Souci, allegedly striking Filip near the saloon. Two people leaving a credit union next to the saloon found him on the side of the road just after midnight.</p><p>Yurkin surrendered her vehicle later that day. According to her, she heard a thump while she was driving near the saloon, but believed she had hit a deer or some other animal.</p><p>Police are accusing her of failing to stop. She denies having been intoxicated at the time of the incident.</p><p>Records show Yurkin has been out $25,000 unsecured bail since her arrest.</p><style>
