Casey: Shutdown, wall fight is ‘crisis of leadership’

<p>HAZLETON &#8212; For Thursday night&#8217;s wrestling meet against defending Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 champion Coughlin, Hazleton Area rolled out brand new mats.</p><p>Make it 1-0 on the new rubber.</p><p>The Cougars handed the Crusaders their first loss in the division in nearly two years with a 42-21 victory.</p><p>&#8220;In the Wyoming Valley Conference, they&#8217;re all big ones because they&#8217;re always all coming after ya,&#8221; Cougars coach Keith Maurer said.</p><p>Coming off a team win at the Wyoming Valley Conference Tournament last weekend, Hazleton Area could have performed better, Maurer said. But he&#8217;ll take the victory as his team moves to 3-0 in the division.</p><p>&#8220;I thought we were a little flat tonight, to be honest,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We came away with the win. I think we wrestled OK. It wasn&#8217;t our best performance, but Coughlin made us look bad. Coming off the conference tournament win, I&#8217;m happy with it. But we got some work to do.&#8221;</p><p>With easy wins last month over Crestwood and Dallas, the Cougars were challenged early by the Crusaders (3-1) and Coughlin held a one-point lead at the midway point of the dual.</p><p>Unfortunately for the Crusaders though, the meet started at 106 pounds; the lower weights are where they&#8217;re strong. The upper weights are where the Cougars are toughest.</p><p>Johnny Corra got Hazleton Area started with a tech fall at 106. Coughlin won the next three weights to go up 125 on a forfeit and a pair of decisions from Cooper Price (120) and Jayden Pahler (126). After the Cougars&#8217; Christian Kislan (132) won by major decision and Stephen Martisofski (138) won by decision to tie the match at 12-12, Coughlin&#8217;s Darren Clarke put his team back in front 15-12 with a win by decision at the halfway point of the match.</p><p>&#8220;I thought some of those matches we could have won outright and one match we did win by decision, I thought we could have got bonus points,&#8221; Coughlin coach Dave Parsnik said. &#8220;For the most part, we wrestled well. I thought we could have picked up a few more points in the lighter weights.&#8221;</p><p>The Cougars showed strength at the top weights by winning six of the final seven bouts and all with bonus points. Shane Noonan won by fall at 220, while Charles Everdale (152) and Jayson Brielmeier (182) won by tech fall. And Jake Marnell earned a major decision. Each team gave up six for a forfeit in the dual&#8217;s second half.</p><p>&#8220;I was pleasantly surprised in the heavier kids. We knew we weren&#8217;t as strong there, and we did fight off our backs,&#8221; Parsnik said. &#8220;If we had wrestled a little better in the lighter weights, it would have been closer because we did stay off our backs. I&#8217;m happy with the way we performed. I thought we did OK with a younger team against a good Hazleton team.&#8221;</p><p>In the second half of the divisional schedule, Hazleton Area will see Pittston Area on Thursday before taking on Wyoming Valley West on Wednesday.</p><p>&#8220;As long as we continue to wrestle, we&#8217;re gonna be OK, but this is a funny sport with 14 weight classes, and when you&#8217;re giving up two forfeits, things can get crazy,&#8221; Maurer said.</p><p>Coughlin, which only allowed one fall in the match, may have been hit with its first loss of the divisional slate, but it was a good test, Parsnik said, because now the team faces two more contenders in Dallas on Wednesday before hitting Wyoming Valley West on Thursday.</p><p>&#8220;I told the kids that this is the toughest six or seven days of wrestling we&#8217;re gonna have this year,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So far, I thought we wrestled OK tonight, and I hope we have that same effort against Dallas and Valley West.&#8221;</p><p><strong>Hanover Area 42, Meyers 31</strong></p><p>D.J. Erickson followed up his 100th career win on Wednesday with No. 101 on Thursday with another pin at 152 pounds, helping the Hawkeyes to the victory.
