Hazleton Area wrestling snaps Coughlin’s streak

KINGSTON &#8212; There were no shiny balloons, no commemorative basketball to honor Dimitri Gnall&#8217;s final accomplishment on the basketball court Thursday night.Instead, the Wyoming Seminary senior had to settle for being mobbed by his teammates.On the night where Gnall scored the game&#8217;s first two points for the 1,000th of his career, it was the three he prevented that had the biggest impact. Gnall blocked a Holy Redeemer 3-pointer at the buzzer as Seminary held on for a 45-43 victory in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 3 boys basketball game.Seminary (5-0 Div. 3, 10-1) took over sole possession of first place in the division. The Blue Knights remained atop the District 2 Class 3A standings with their fourth consecutive win over Redeemer (4-1 Div. 3, 8-2).Gnall scored the game&#8217;s opening bucket, stopping the contest for the obligatory 1,000-point celebration.&#8220;The night was crazy,&#8221; said Gnall, who finished with a game-high 20 points and a team-high nine rebounds. &#8220;We knew going into it it would be a good game. I hit my 1,000th point, I was really excited about that. Getting to play Redeemer. They brought a bunch of kids that brought a lot of excitement to the gym. We had a lot of people making a lot of noise.&#8221;Seminary later had its lead up to 39-25 midway through the third quarter before Redeemer went on a run in the fourth to set up a possible game-winning shot.Redeemer whittled the deficit down to 44-43 before putting Seminary&#8217;s Nick Ganter on the foul line with 10.6 seconds left. Ganter made his first shot, but missed the second and Redeemer&#8217;s Jared Piontkowski grabbed the carom for his 12th rebound of the game.After a timeout, Redeemer inbounded and Collin Cook dribbled to the left of the free throw circle and outside the 3-point arc. Cook then fired a pass to Derek Answini on the left baseline. Answini was open until Gnall, who was guarding Cook, took two steps and a flying leap to block the shot.&#8220;Dimitri just closed out so well on that shot,&#8221; Seminary coach Pete Moses said. &#8220;His athleticism allows him to close out without fouling. A lot of these kids don&#8217;t have that luxury.&#8221;&#8220;I saw Collin come off a screen and I thought he was going to pull up,&#8221; Gnall said. &#8220;That&#8217;s what we planned for in the huddle. And then when I saw him pick it up, I tried to get back to my guy as quick as possible.&#8221;Mission accomplished despite some rapid momentum shifts throughout the second half.After Seminary built its 39-25 lead, Cook rallied the Royals by leading them on a 9-0 run. Seminary then missed its first six shots of the fourth quarter, and Redeemer moved within 44-41 with 1:18 to play on a basket by center Nick Prociak, who finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds.Redeemer freshman Justice Shoats followed with a steal, leading Answini on a fast break to pull Redeemer within 44-43 with 45 seconds left.&#8220;I think we got the shots we wanted, they just weren&#8217;t falling,&#8221; Moses said. &#8220;I told the guys during the timeouts between the quarters we were getting the looks we want, but they&#8217;re just not dropping and they&#8217;re eventually going to drop for us.&#8221;Nanticoke Area 59, Dallas 51The Trojans topped Nanticoke thanks to Nate Kreitzer and his 3-point shooting.Kreitzer made five 3-pointers and finished with 23 points.Jack Farrel had 12 points to lead the Mountaineers.Meyers 52, Coughlin 39Kendall Brewster and the Mohawks bounced back after a heartbreaking loss to Hazleton Area with a win over Coughlin.Brewster had a game-high 21 points. Blake Masker was Meyers next highest scorer with 11 points.Crestwood 68, Berwick 33The Comets cruised past Berwick thanks 11 3-pointers made by the whole team.Ryan Petrosky was responsible for three of Crestwood&#8217;s 3-pointers and had a game-high 17 points. Sean Murphy and Camden Boris also had 10 points each for the Comets.MMI Prep 51, Lake-Lehman 49The Preppers won used a big 21 point first quarter to beat Lake-Lehman.Both Mason and Matt Marchetti led MMI Prep with 14 points.Abe Dabsheh led the Black Knights with 16 points.Hazleton Area 82, Wyoming Area 40The Cougars rolled past Wyoming Area behind a great performance from Da&#8217;Mir Faison.Faison had a game-high 20 points for Hazleton Area.Dan Wiedl had 13 points to lead the Warriors.GAR 76, Pittston Area 62The Grenadiers powered past the Patriots behind Curtis Smith and his 27 points.Will Johnson also had 24 points for GAR.The Patriots posted 30 points in the fourth quarter despite the loss.Mike George led Pittston Area with 15 points.Tunkhannock 56, Wyoming Valley West 33The Tigers and Tyler Faux beat Wyoming Valley West.Faux had a game-high 25 points.
