SHICKSHINNY &#8212; As a defensive dynamo, Jen Kurkowski typically comes off the bench to stop opposing guards from finding way to score points.Thursday night, she turned into a sniper.And just in time to save Nanticoke Area&#8217;s league championship hopes.Kurkowski drilled two critical 3-point field goals and scored all eight of her points in the fourth quarter, speedy Amiah Lukowski changed the game&#8217;s momentum and the Trojanettes rallied past Northwest 49-45 in a tight, intra-division girls basketball game at the Northwest gym.&#8220;I saw I was open,&#8221; Kurkowski said. &#8220;I saw the team needed it. I couldn&#8217;t do it without them.&#8221;It&#8217;s likely the Trojanettes wouldn&#8217;t be celebrating without Lukowski.A District 2 track and field record-setting sprinter as a freshman, Lukowski flashed her speed during a three-minute spurt in the third quarter that gave Nanticoke Area the upper hand.Lukowski scored her first 10 points after halftime, hit a 3-point goal to give Nanticoke Area its first lead since the opening minutes of the game, 28-26, and then added a three-point play to give the Trojanettes a five-point advantage late in the quarter.&#8220;I started to get to the basket more,&#8221; said Lukowski, who finished with a team-high 16 points. &#8220;And they were feeding me the ball more.&#8221;The result was a mad dash to victory for Nanticoke Area, which moved to 7-2 in the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 with its fourth straight win. The Trojanettes are a game behind 8-1 teams Berwick and Lake-Lehman and all of them trail Holy Redeemer (8-0) for the division lead. So a loss Thursday would have made it very difficult for the Trojanettes to keep their focus on winning their fourth Division 2 title in five years.&#8220;Our goals stay the same,&#8221; Nanticoke Area first-year head coach Ed Grant said. &#8220;We fight to the very end with that.&#8221;Meanwhile, Northwest still has a fighting shot to capture a third straight Division 3 championship.The Rangers slipped to 4-3 in league play, but remained a half-game behind Wyoming Seminary (5-3) for first place in their division.For the longest time, they had the lead.Maddie McLendon&#8217;s leaning, baseline pop-shot early in the second half completed a 12-2 run for Northwest that gave the Rangers their largest lead, 14-6. And Kennedy Yaple&#8217;s trey 2:44 before halftime had the Rangers rolling with a seven-point lead.Northwest clung to its advantage past the midway point of the third quarter, thanks to mainly to Brenna Babcock&#8217;s game-high 17 points, seven more from McLendon and a collapsing defense that confused the Trojanettes.Then Lukowski began making sprints to the basket, and things changed in a hurry.&#8220;When she gets going, she makes us go,&#8221; Grant said. &#8220;She did a better job in the second half of really crashing the basket.&#8221;It didn&#8217;t exactly crush the Rangers, though.Babcock converted a three-point play to put Northwest back on top 33-32 in the first 28 seconds of the fourth quarter, then drove the lane for a bucket to tie the game 39-39 with 3:02 to play.Just 21 seconds later, Kurkowski aimed and fired &#8212; sinking her second 3-pointer of the period, along with Northwest&#8217;s hopes.The Rangers never caught up again.&#8220;We rely on her, basically, more on the defensive end,&#8221; Grant said. &#8220;But she&#8217;ll put it up.&#8220;She was poison.&#8221;In the final 40 seconds, Lukowski and Kurkowski pretty much buried Northwest&#8217;s victory hopes. Lukowski&#8217;s two foul shots gave Nanticoke Area a five-point lead with 39 seconds remaining and Kurkowski&#8217;s two foul shots with 20 seconds left sealed the outcome with a six-point lead for the Trojanettes.&#8220;That&#8217;s a big win for us,&#8221; Lukowski said. &#8220;It keeps our winning streak going.&#8221;Dallas 41, Pittston Area 29Haley Habrack was the only player in double figures, scoring 12 for Dallas in its win over Pittston Area.Samantha Kern added eight for the Mountaineers, who outscored Pittston Area 23-12 after halftime.Emma Coles paced Pittston Area with nine points.Wyoming Area 35, Wyoming Seminary 28Aleah Kranson and Nicole Silinskie combined for 31 of Wyoming Area&#8217;s points in a victory over Wyoming Seminary.Kranson had 19 points and Silinskie tossed in 12.Ally Vezendy led Seminary with 10 points.Berwick 49, MMI Prep 16The Bulldogs routed MMI Prep, holding the Preppers under 20 points.Renny Murphy led Berwick with 11 points and Sierra Miednar had nine points. Both made three 3-pointers.Irene Altmiller had seven points to lead the Preppers.Wyoming Valley West 54, Coughlin 34The Spartans picked up a big win on the road behind Nicole Boutanos.Boutanos had 12 points to lead Wyoming Valley West. Andi Blaski, Toni Amato and Jessica Shaver each had nine points.Hanover Area 39, Tunkhannock 35The Hawks used a big third quarter to come back from a halftime deficit to Tunkhannock.Sara Tuzinski lead the charge for with six points in the third quarter and 14 overall. Madison Hooper scored 12 points.Lake-Lehman 53, GAR 22Lake-Lehman handled GAR with a 31-point win.Madison Borum and Sarah Salus were the leading scorers in the game with 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Black Knights.Olivia Prato and Gloria Adjayi each had eight points to lead the Grenadiers.Holy Redeemer 58, Meyers 38Sam Yancha had a game-high 21 points for Holy Redeemer and Julia Andrejko was right behind her with 20 points.Allycia Harris had 12 points to lead the Mohawks.Hazleton Area 57, Crestwood 32The Cougars used a strong first half, where they outscored Crestwood 42-14 to win.Hazleton Area received offense from almost everyone on the roster, but Marissa Trivelpiece led all of them with 13 points.
