Old Forge man gets prison for swindling $171K from Mountain Top woman

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; A Luzerne County judge strongly advised a 19-year-old from Plymouth to take advantage of developmental programs in state prison for at least the next 18 months.</p><p>Adam Nicholas Shaw briefly sobbed as he apologized for two separate crimes in 2017: an armed robbery during an illegal drug sale inside a vehicle in Wilkes-Barre plus a strong-arm robbery in Plymouth.</p><p>Shaw was 17 when he committed the offense in Wilkes-Barre but was charged as an adult.</p><p>&#8220;I apologize, I&#8217;m sorry for what I did,&#8221; a crying Shaw told Judge Fred A. Pierantoni III on Friday.</p><p>Wilkes-Barre police alleged Shaw, Anthony Nelson Smith, 20, of Plymouth, and a juvenile traveled to Kidder Street to sell marijuana oil to an employee at McDonald&#8217;s Restaurant on March 18, 2017.</p><p>Shaw was a passenger in the vehicle and gave the employee the oil intending to sell it for $150. When the employee refused to buy it as he thought it was fake, Shaw brandished what looked to be a firearm and demanded money, driving away with $300, court records say.</p><p>City police later learned the weapon was actually a pellet gun.</p><p>Co-defendant Smith is facing trial on a single count of criminal conspiracy to commit robbery in that case.</p><p>Meanwhile, Plymouth police say Shaw and a juvenile robbed a man walking in the area of Center Avenue and West Walnut Street on Sept. 25, 2017. Shaw brandished a knife and held it against the man&#8217;s throat, demanded the man&#8217;s wallet, and kicked the man in the leg.</p><p>Shaw pleaded guilty to separate counts of robbery in October.</p><p>Assistant District Attorney Matthew Muckler asked for a sentence that included state prison due to the seriousness of the offenses, while Shaw&#8217;s attorney, Joanna Smith, requested a sentence at the county lockup with the opportunity for work release.</p><p>The defense attorney said Shaw had a job lined up at a family-owned garbage disposal business.</p><p>But Pierantoni sentenced Shaw to 18 months to three years in state prison followed by two years on probation. Shaw was also sentenced on charges of criminal conspiracy to commit burglary and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. Those court records remain sealed.</p><style>
