Northwest Area Jr/Sr High School students named to Honor Roll

<p>Shawnee Fort Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution recently selected Regent Kathleen Smith as the Chapter Outstanding Regent. Smith joined the DAR on Dec. 7, 2002 and has held several chairmanships on both the local and state levels as well as the office of Chapter Registrar.</p><p>In July 2009, at the request of the State Regent, Smith was appointed Organizing Chapter Regent and Shawnee Fort Chapter was officially organized in Plymouth that November with 12 members. Shawnee Fort Chapter was the first chapter organized in Luzerne County since 1896.</p><p>Smith has served as Regent for the majority of its existence.</p><p>Since organizing, the chapter has been busy in the community assisting with historic preservation, participating in patriotic activities, marking graves of American Revolution Veterans and encouraging education throughout the community. Members of the chapter have served on the Wyoming Valley Veterans Day Parade Committee since 2014. In 2016, the chapter was recognized by the National Society for membership growth with the Golden Eagle Award. Shawnee Fort Chapter was one of only 61 chapters in the organization , out of 3,000 chapters across the United States and internationally, and the only chapter based in Pennsylvania, to achieve this.</p><p>More recently, the chapter has been working closely with the Wilkes-Barre Preservation Society in the restoration and preservation of the Zebulon Butler House on South River Street in Wilkes-Barre.</p><p>For information on how to join the DAR, please contact Kathleen Smith at smithkdar2001@hotmail.com or 570-704-9809.</p><style>
