<p>Banished from the family dinner table after he spills his soup, a quivering and unsteady &#8220;extremely old man&#8221; lurches and stumbles and ends up on the floor with his face in a wooden bowl. Kind of like a dog.</p><p>His son and daughter-in-law seem happy to leave him there &#8212; until they notice their child hammering away at a carpentry project.</p><p>It&#8217;s a trough, but not for a cow, the youngster explains. No, it&#8217;s not for pigs, either. &#8220;It&#8217;s for you and Mama when you grow old and I have to take care of you.&#8221;</p><p>Next thing you know, the son and daughter-in-law are welcoming Grandpa back to the table.</p><p>&#8221; &#8216;Grandfather and Grandchild&#8217; is a story about elder abuse,&#8221; said Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble member Andrew Hubatsek, who is one of three BTE members directing &#8220;Something Grimm: Tales From the Brothers G&#8221; today through Aug. 4 at the Alvina Krause Theatre in Bloomsburg. &#8220;It&#8217;s a lesson for young people about how to treat their parents, because people model what they see.&#8221;</p><p>You can find lots of lessons in the six stories, which BTE member James Goode, aided recently by fellow ensemble members Hubatsek and Daniel Roth, has based on folk tales that brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm gathered in the 19th century.</p><p>You know the kind of tips that tend to leap from the lore: Don&#8217;t judge by appearances. Make sure you&#8217;re not opening your door to a hungry wolf. When you travel into the deep woods, always leave a trail of something, like glow-in-the-dark marbles, or legumes. And try to be brave.</p><p>&#8220;Hans is like a normal kid, not a special kid, or a hero,&#8221; 11-year-old Lucien Dent, who plays one of the title characters in the &#8220;Hans and Greta&#8221; segment, said before a recent rehearsal. &#8220;I guess he&#8217;s protective of his sister, but he&#8217;s scared.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;He&#8217;s brave and cowardly at the same time,&#8221; said 13-year-old Adrianna Howell, another of the 14 young people who are taking turns with seven roles in the production.</p><p>The kids said they&#8217;re having a blast. After all, who <em>woudn&#8217;t</em> enjoy portraying a donkey, a cat, a dog, or a rooster who can outsmart a bunch of robbers. Especially if you get to say such fun lines as &#8220;Cha-Cha to your doom.&#8221; Which sounds a little like cock-a-doodle-doo.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m gonna get my head chopped off,&#8221; 7-year-old Savilla Chyko said before rehearsal, her brown eyes alight with mock horror as she spoke in character as the rooster from &#8220;The Bremen Town Musicians.&#8221;</p><p>Speaking of possible beheadings and other violence, the Brothers Grimm are noted for being a bit gruesome.</p><p>&#8220;But it&#8217;s all fairly light-hearted,&#8221; Goode said. &#8220;I told the box office to tell people, if your kids saw &#8216;A Christmas Carol&#8217; and could handle Marley, they&#8217;ll be OK with this.&#8221;</p><p>In addition to &#8220;The Bremen Town Musicians,&#8221; &#8220;Grandfather and Grandchild&#8221; and &#8220;Hans and Greta,&#8221; other stories included in the performance are &#8220;The Nanny Goat and Her Seven Kids,&#8221; &#8220;The Robber Bridegroom&#8221; and &#8220;The Bearskin Soldier.&#8221;</p><p>Connecting them all are scenes, written and directed by Goode, in which Eric Wunsch and Jon Schultz portray Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm, whose love for language leads them to compile Germany&#8217;s first dictionary in addition to collecting the traditional old tales. </p><p>&#8220;Wilhelm is the crazier one,&#8221; said Wunsch, who also portrays &#8220;a wolf, an extremely old man, and a series of concerned fathers&#8221; throughout the production.</p><p>Schultz, in addition to portraying Jacob Grimm, has such meaty &#8212; as in, maybe, cannibalistic &#8212; roles as the Robber Bridegroom, who is a bad guy in disguise. For contrast, he also plays a good guy in disguise when he&#8217;s the Bearskin Soldier.</p><style>
