Trailer premiers for highly anticipated ‘The Irishman’ based on Bufalino crime family

<p>A highly anticipated Martin Scorsese mob film with ties to our area is one step closer to seeing the light of day, after a trailer for the film was released on Wednesday.</p><p>Later this year, Scorsese&#8217;s &#8220;The Irishman&#8221; will be exploring the career of Frank &#8220;The Irishman&#8221; Sheeran, who professed in the 2004 book &#8220;I Heard You Paint Houses&#8221; to acting as a hitman for Russell Bufalino, head of the locally-run Bufalino crime family. Sheerna will be played by Robert DeNiro.</p><p>In the book, written by Charles Brandt, Sheeran is said to have confessed to to murdering labor leader Jimmy Hoffa, played by Al Pacino in the film. Brandt, a former prosecutor, writes in the book that Sheeran confessed to shooting Hoffa twice inside a Detroit house at the direction of Bufalino.</p><p>The film also stars Joe Pesci as Bufalino and features performances from Harvey Keitel, Anna Paquin, Bobby Cannavale and Ray Romano.</p><p>A trailer for the film dropped on Wednesday ahead of the film&#8217;s premiere at the New York Film Festival on Sept. 27. &#8220;The Irishman&#8221; will see a limited theater run before heading to Netflix at an as-yet unconfirmed time later this year.</p><p>A Times Leader writer spoke with Brandt shortly after rights to the film were optioned by Netflix in 2017, saying that he was told the script, written by Steven Zallian, &#8220;was on the order of &#8216;The Godfather.&#8217;&#8221;</p><p>Zallian is known for Oscar-winning work on &#8220;Schindler&#8217;s List.&#8221;</p><p>When contacted for comment about the film on Wednesday, a spokesman for Brandt said he would have to decline an interview at this time in response to a request from Netflix.</p><p>According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scorsese&#8217;s film uses innovative anti-aging visual effects. Both DeNiro and Pacino are in their 70s and, while the movie does span decades, digital de-aging technology was required to make the actors look far younger in some parts of the film. This technology was created by Lucasfilm&#8217;s Industrial Lights and Magic. </p><style>
