<p>DALLAS &#8212; Weis Markets has reached a deal to buy two Thomas&#8217; Food Market stores in the Back Mountain, with plans to re-open one and close the other.</p><p>The affected stores are Thomas&#8217; Foodtown in Dallas and the recently re-branded Thomas&#8217; Food Basics in Shavertown, and the sale is expected to be complete by year&#8217;s end.</p><p>Weis officials said they plan to shut down the Food Basics store due to its size and proximity to existing supermarkets.</p><p>The Shavertown location &#8220;is a small store where we are unable to offer our full assortment,&#8221; Weis spokesman Dennis Curtin told the Times Leader. &#8220;It&#8217;s also very close to the other store we&#8217;re purchasing and our Dallas store.&#8221;</p><p>Foodtown of Dallas and Food Basics in Shavertown are about 2.5 miles apart, with an existing Weis store at 2525 Memorial Highway in Dallas roughly halfway between them. Foodtown of Dallas, in the Country Club Shopping Center, which will become a Weis, is about 1.1 miles from the existing Weis store.</p><p>Sunbury-based Weis currently has six Luzerne County stores. In addition to the Memorial Highway location, they operate in Duryea, Hazleton, Nanticoke, Plains Twp., and Wright Twp. The transaction will bring that total to seven.</p><p>Officials with Thomas&#8217; Food Markets referred questions about the sale to Weis, but did point out that they still own locations in Hazleton and Shickshinny.</p><p>The 16,000-square-foot store on Route 309 <a href="https://www.timesleader.com/news/747327/deep-discounts-to-come-to-shavertown-in-new-food-basics-store" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">was re-branded under the Food Basics deep discount brand earlier this year</a>.</p><p>&#8220;We have great respect for the operators and associates of Thomas&#8217; Foodtown and Food Basics in Dallas and Shavertown and look forward to continuing to serve the Dallas area,&#8221; Weis Markets Chairman, President and CEO Jonathan Weis said in a statement released Monday.</p><p>&#8220;We look forward to interviewing their associates for possible employment with our company.&#8221;</p><p>Curtin told the Times Leader he did not immediately know how many workers the two stores employ, but &#8220;we plan to interview the associates of these stores for possible employment with our company.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;When we purchase a store or group of stores, a significant majority of the associates usually come to work for us,&#8221; Curtin added.</p><p>Weis, which operates 198 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York West Virginia and Virginia, has been on a buying spree in recent years.</p><p><a href="https://www.mediagrouponlineinc.com/2017/06/16/expanding-weis-racks-65m-tab-store-acquisitions/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">As the Central Penn Business Journal reported</a>, Weis in 2016 topped $3 billion in sales that year for the first time in its history, which dates to 1912. Also in 2016, Weis spent $65 million to acquire stores from rival Mid-Atlantic chains including 38 former Food Lion stores and five Mars Super Market locations in greater Baltimore.</p><p>Curtin said Monday it wasn&#8217;t known yet whether orrenovations and work will be necessary on the Dallas store.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s early in the process, we will have more information as we work it,&#8221; Curtin added.</p><style>
