<p>For Jay Siegel and his wife, Judy, a safari to Tanzania within the past year was a bucket-list dream come true.</p><p>Specifying that he was &#8220;hunting only with my camera,&#8221; Siegel said he spotted hippos, rhinos, elephants, cheetahs, giraffes and &#8212; best of all &#8212; a lion.</p><p>And, yes, the lion was taking a snooze.</p><p>&#8220;I actually saw a lion sleeping,&#8221; Siegel said during a recent telephone interview, with a smile in his voice.</p><p>It&#8217;s significant that Siegel saw a lion getting its beauty rest because millions of people around the world, even if they don&#8217;t know Siegel&#8217;s name, will recognize his voice as the soaring falsetto that breaks out of the <em>A-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh </em>chant to sing &#8220;In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight.&#8221;</p><p>You&#8217;ll be able to hear Jay Siegel&#8217;s Tokens sing the classic &#8220;The Lion Sleeps Tonight&#8221; in person if you attend &#8220;Oh, What A Night!&#8221; an evening of doo wop and legends arranged by local promoter Joe Nardone for 7 p.m. Oct. 26 at the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts, Public Square, Wilkes-Barre.</p><p>Other stars of the evening are The Brooklyn Bridge, The Vogues, The Capris and Vito Picone and the Elegants. Here&#8217;s a rundown about each of them, gleaned from a news release:</p><p>&#8226; The Brooklyn Bridge was originally formed by combining Johnny Maestro, lead singer of the Crests, with the Del-Satins, who were Dion&#8217;s backup singers, and a horn section. You can expect them to sing the Crests&#8217; hits &#8220;16 Candles,&#8221; &#8220;The Angels Listened In&#8221; and &#8220;Step by Step&#8221; as well as Bridge hits &#8220;The Worst That Could Happen,&#8221; &#8220;Blessed is the Rain,&#8221; &#8220;You&#8217;ll Never Walk Alone&#8221; and &#8220;Your Husband, My Wife.&#8221;</p><p>&#8226; The Vogues, known for strong harmonies, hail from Turtle Creek in Pennsylvania&#8217;s Allegheny County. They&#8217;ve had nine Top 20 hits including &#8220;You&#8217;re the One,&#8221; &#8220;Five O&#8217;Clock World,&#8221; &#8220;Turn Around, Look at Me&#8221; and &#8220;My Special Angel.&#8221;</p><p>&#8226; The Capris, formed in Queens, N.Y., had smash hits with &#8220;There&#8217;s A Moon Out Tonight&#8221; and &#8220;Morse Code of Love.&#8221; This is their first appearance at the Kirby Center.</p><p>&#8226; Also new to the Kirby Center stage, and opening the show, are Vito Picone and the Elegants, who formed in Staten Island in 1956. Their song &#8220;Little Star&#8221; sold almost 3 million copies, spent 19 weeks on the charts and has been used in many movies as well as the HBO series &#8220;The Sopranos.&#8221; Picone also appeared in the Oscar-winning film &#8220;Goodfellas.&#8221;</p><p>&#8226; Jay Siegel&#8217;s Tokens had two million-selling hits, and you can expect to hear both &#8220;Tonight I Fell in Love&#8221; and &#8220;The Lion Sleeps Tonight&#8221; at the Kirby show. The latter topped the charts in 1961 and climbed to the top again 33 years later when new generations of fans heard in the Disney movie &#8220;The Lion King.&#8221;</p><p>The song was written in 1939, Siegel said, and contains the Zulu word for lion. Describing it as both a lullaby and a hunting song, he said, &#8220;They thought if they would do this chant the lion would go to sleep and they&#8217;d be able to make their kill and everybody would have lion&#8217;s meat for the next month or so.&#8221;</p><p>Siegel&#8217;s work as a singer goes back to his teen years as Lincoln High School, where he and school mate Neil Sedaka were in the chorus together and formed a group called the Linc-Tones.</p><p>&#8220;We played all the school dances and we were guests on Ted Steele&#8217;s Dance Time, which was a kind of a forerunner to American Bandstand. I was just a kid and it was very exciting.&#8221;</p><p>Sedaka went on to become a solo artist, and the two &#8220;remain friends to this day.&#8221;</p><p>Oh, and if you want to take a great vacation, Siegel recommends a trip to Africa. &#8220;For three days we stayed in a tented camp in the middle of the Serengeti,&#8221; he said. &#8220;For anybody who loves nature, it was amazing. You can&#8217;t compare it to anything else.&#8221;</p><style>
