<p>NANTICOKE &#8212; A man from Puerto Rico charged with crashing a vehicle that severely injured a 16-year-old girl after having sex in a church parking lot waived his right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday.</p><p>A shackled Christian Burgos, 24, whose address is listed as South 13th Street, Harrisburg, appeared before District Judge Donald Whittaker. But after a lengthy private meeting with his court appointed attorney, Enid Harris, Burgos elected to waive charges of accidents involving death or injury, interference with custody of a child and corruption of minors to Luzerne County Court.</p><p>Prosecutors withdrew a count of reckless endangerment against Burgos.</p><p>Burgos remains jailed at the county correctional facility without bail.</p><p>Newport Township police charged Burgos after investigating a crash on Alden Mountain Road on Aug. 23.</p><p>Burgos was driving a 2007 Audi with the teen girl as the passenger when he lost control of the vehicle that struck several trees. Police found Burgos walking around as officers discovered the girl wearing pajamas in the front passenger seat with her arm pinned against two trees, according to court records.</p><p>While speaking with the girl trying to calm her down, she initially identified Burgos as her uncle.</p><p>Firefighters cut away trees to remove the girl from the wreckage. It took nearly 40 minutes to extricate the girl, who was flown to Geisinger Medical Center near Danville.</p><p>Burgos told police he is from Puerto Rico and did not have a driver&#8217;s license. He claimed he picked up the girl to have consensual sex and took her to a church in Nanticoke to perform the lewd acts, court records say.</p><p>Burgos said the girl&#8217;s mother was aware they had feelings for each other and the mother was keeping them apart.</p><p>Police said the girl reported Burgos picked her up and took her behind a church to have sex prior to the crash. </p><style>
