NEWPORT TWP. &mdash; A Hanover Township man was arraigned Wednesday on charges he stole items from a store when he was denied service for refusing to wear a face mask earlier this month.
				Township police alleged Jordan Vargas, 29, of South Regent Street, entered KVAL Food and Fuel in Glen Lyon without wearing a face mask on May 2.
				Police said the store has a policy that customers are to wear face mask or be refused service. A sign on the entrance door states, &ldquo;No mask, no entry,&rdquo; according to court records.
				Vargas got upset and allegedly stole items when the store clerk refused to conduct the sales transaction.
				According to the criminal complaint:
				After Vargas entered the store, a clerk advised him he needed to wear a face mask while he was inside the business. The clerk claimed Vargas became angry and told the clerk he was discriminating against him because he was from New York.
				Vargas told the clerk he did not have the virus and did not need to wear a mask.
				Police in the complaint reported Vargas placed what appeared to be a do-rag on his face and grabbed a can of Chef Boyardee spaghetti and a bottle of Mountain Dew. When Vargas placed the items on the counter, he allegedly removed the cover from his face resulting in the clerk to advise him again he needed to wear the mask, the complaint says.
				Vargas began arguing with the clerk who placed the items in a shopping bag. Vargas allegedly grabbed the bag by force without paying and left the store.
				Police identified Vargas through social media and surveillance cameras inside the store.
				Vargas was arraigned by District Judge Ferris Webby on charges of robbery and retail theft. He was released on $20,000 unsecured bail.

Police: Customer upset over face-mask policy stole items from store
