The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources Wednesday reported the first positive test of the West Nile virus in a mosquito in Luzerne County this year.
				The mosquito tested was in Forty Fort, DEP said.
				There have been no human cases of the West Nile Virus in Luzerne county. The only human case reported was in Potter County, according to the DEP.
				The West Nile Virus is typically spread by the bite of an infected mosquito.
				There has been neither information nor evidence to suggest mosquitoes can transmit the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, the World Health Organization said. COVID-19 is a respiratory virus primarily spread through droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes or through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose, WHO said.
				People with mild cases of the West Nile Virus experience fever, headache, body aches, skin rash and swollen lymph glands. But most people infected with it will not have any illness, according to the DEP.
				People with severe cases of West Nile Virus develop encephalitis, a brain inflammation, with symptoms that include headache, high fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, muscle weakness and paralysis, according to the DEP.
				There is no vaccine or specific treatment for the West Nile Virus, according to the DEP. Symptoms of mild cases will generally last a few days. Symptoms of severe cases may last several weeks, although neurological effects may be permanent.
				The West Nile Virus first appeared in Pennsylvania in 2000. The state DEP along with the departments of Health and Agriculture developed a surveillance program for it. The Department of Health tests for West Nile Virus cases and monitors human cases. DEP coordinates the state&rsquo;s mosquito control program. The Department of Agriculture monitors animals for the virus.
