Tunkhannock Tops Coughlin, 
Gains District Playoff Berth

Silliness. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Pure silliness is the only way to describe Michael Frayn's "Noises Off,"
the popular Broadway play which was performed last weekend by Wilkes
University in the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center for the Performing Arts. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The show, which kicked off the school theater season, is a play in-a-play,
which tells the story of a misfit cast, all of whom are caught in love
triangles as they tour a play called "Nothing On." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 James Evans played Lloyd Dallas, the frustrated director of the show who
must guide these immature actors to produce something at least half decent. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The play begins the night before opening, and no one really knows what's
going on -- not even Dallas. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The first act seemed to drag for an eternity as the mess-ups by Lloyd's
cast and the bad one-liners wore thin. Evans, however, managed to salvage the
first act as he directed his actors from the audience with his perfectly timed
lines and sarcastic attitude. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The second act particularly sparkled as the cast excelled with quick comic
timing throughout a physically demanding scene taking place backstage during
the production. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Even though the student cast overacted to an annoying point at times, they
were strong comically. Carol Kerdock played the old maid in the play. Her
performance was energetic, but her apparent youth hurt the character's
effectiveness. Billi Jo Martin was wonderful as the ditzy actress Brooke
Ashton. Her sense of comic timing showed clearly in this role. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Tom Jarmiolowski played the neurotic Frederick Fellowes and provided some
funny moments. He was joined by Darlene Fendrock, who put in a solid
performance as the level-headed cast member. Brent Dilks also lent his comic
skills as the alcoholic Selsdon Mowbray. And Amy Kahanowitz and Dave LeBahn
also scored well in supporting roles. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But Jason Delcampe stole the show as the stuck-up Garry Lejeune. Delcampe's
farcical ability and rhythm were tremendous throughout the show as he tried to
make his performance acceptable, despite the apparent problems he and his cast
faced. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wright let some of his actors exaggerate their roles too much, but he was
smart enough to choose a play for his debut that was funny and demanding with
a slice of the perverse. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Noises Off" may have been silly, but it was entertaining.
