WVIA trails candidates as races heat up &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 WVIA-TV's "State Of Pennsylvania" will digress from its usual monthly
format to offer more '92 election coverageThe first "State Of Pennsylvania"
special features democratic candidate Lynn Yeakel in her bid for the United
States senate seat. It airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. on Channel 44. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Yeakel said her reason for running was to unseat U.S Sen. Arlen Specter,
R-Philadelphia, because of his questioning of a female witness during the
confirmation hearings of Supreme Court associate justice Clarence Thomas. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A Bryn Mawr resident and former president of a Philadelphia-based group
that raises money for organizations that assists women and children, Yeakel
said she is advocating a campaign that is about people and investing in
people. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We have people out of work and people who worry whether they will be
employed six months from now," she said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Since Specter took office 12 years ago, the state has lost 400,000
manufacturing jobs and $16 billion in federal funds," Yeakel was quoted as
saying in a recent publication. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 An independent "Citizens Jury" in Philadelphia heard a briefing by experts
and pitches by the candidates, then rated Specter better on the economy,
education and health care. Earlier, the League of Women Voters gave Yeakel the
health care point but preferred Specter on the other issues. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I am running a campaign on the issues, and the fact that Yeakel hasn't
paid her taxes in 11 years is one big issue," Specter was quoted as saying.
"His campaign and tactics are trying to undermine my character," Yeakel
responded. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Forget substance. He is trying to portray me as someone who doesn't have
the qualifications to be trusted." To date, Yeakel has received over 39
endorsements from unions to environmental organizations. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "State Of Pennsylvania" will have Specter as its guest on Oct. 21. The
program airs at 8 p.m. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Specter recently charged that Yeakel merely is running on the issue of his
treatment of Hill during the Clarence Thomas hearings. He said that Yeakel has
unfairly characterized his positions and is quick to refute what she has said
about his record. He has repeatedly labeled Yeakel a "one-issue candidate." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In another live broadcast from the WVIA studio, the "WVIA Election '92
Special" will focus on the congressional race of the U.S. Representative seat
(District 11). It will feature U.S. Rep. Paul Kanjorski, D-Nanticoke and
ex-CIA agent Mike Fescina, a republican from Hazleton, in debate on Oct. 15 at
8 p.m. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 According to Fescina, the economy is the number one issue. He believes that
voters' concerns over the economy will decide the race. "We know Congress
isn't working. We have to send people to Congress who will be interested in
economic development. There's no reason a Republican can't win." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kanjorski, who was recently cleared of wrongdoing in the scandal-ridden
House bank, has been elected to four terms. Pollsters give him an overwhelming
lead in the race. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Candidates will be questioned by a panel of journalists from the local
media. The debate is being produced by WVIA in conjunction with the
Wilkes-Barre League of Women Voters.
