 LIU 18 to hold off on returning state money &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Luzerne Intermediate Unit (LIU) 18 voted Wednesday to hold off on
returning $410,996 the state Department of Education said was sent to the LIU &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 by mistakeThe LIU will wait for its solicitor's opinion before sending the
money, which was earmarked for the LIU's early intervention program, back to
Harrisburg. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Earlier this month, a hearing officer returned control of the pre-school
program back to the LIU from the Hazleton Area School District. The state
transferred the program, with its $1.6 million in state funds, to Hazleton in
late May. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Last week, business manager Carmen Mauriello said the LIU received a letter
from the state that demanded the money to be returned. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "They sent us the money to run the program," he said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 If the money isn't received by this Friday the state has threatened to cut
off all other state funding the LIU receives, Mauriello said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The state is appealing the decision. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In other business, the LIU: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Approved a request from state Rep. Thomas Strish, D-Hazleton, for an
extension of his leave of absence from January 1993 through December 1995. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Accepted, with regret, the resignation of Molly Cunningham, accountant,
federal and state programs. The $25,000-per-year position will be advertised.
