 Take time for trout t's strange, this ``off season.'' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Yes, there's still plenty of time to hunt in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Sure, &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 the ice is firming up and hard-water angling looms right around the
cornerCertainly, with a little white stuff provided by Mother Nature, there
may even be new backwoods trails to explore on cross-country skis or snowshoes
this winter. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But in terms of trout fishing -- the purest trout fishing, the kind of
trout fishing best realized alone or with only one fine companion -- the
season is definitely "off." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 No matter. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Let the fly rods rest, let the waders hang unattended. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 There's plenty of things to do to prepare for the time when mayflies and
caddis start fluttering once again. Fortunately, the local Stanley Cooper Sr.
Chapter of Trout Unlimited (TU) can help you survive the winter doldrums. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 TU is a national organization dedicated to protecting our coldwater
resources. The Stanley Cooper Chapter works hard locally to achieve the goals
of national TU and, like a good support group, it can help passionate trout
fishermen (trout bums?) survive winter down-time. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 es, admit it: The doldrums have hit hard. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 What do you do when weather keeps you away from your trout fishing
compulsion? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 You can tie flies, maybe. Anglers worth their waders never admit to having
enough flies. No, never. It's against the rules. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 If you don't know how to craft a fly from scratch, the Stanley Cooper Sr.
Chapter can teach you how. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Once again, the chapter will hold its popular, eight-week fly tying classes
beginning in January. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Once again, the classes which begin Jan. 18 are likely to fill up quickly,
so an early registration is advised. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The classes are taught by some of the best tiers around, including the
highly-respected Stan Cooper Jr., who might just show you how to create a
terribly effective Royal Wulff if you're lucky and patient. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 These classes will provide the basic techniques with which to tie the
entire fly fishing arsenal -- wet flies, dry flies, nymphs and streamers. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The cost is a modest $35. You will need tools, and the chapter can order a
set for you at a reasonable cost. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Then, there's the TU National Conservation Banquet set for March 27 at the
East Mountain Inn, Wilkes-Barre. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The banquet is the chapter's largest and most successful fundraiser. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 WBRE-TV weatherman and ardent fly-fisherman Vince Sweeney will serve as
master of ceremonies. He always manages to keep things hopping. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 During the evening, there will be door prizes, raffles and auctions. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Prizes include state-of-the-art tackle from Orvis, Sage, Scientific Angler,
Bean and Cortland. Limited-edition fine art will also be on the auction block. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The banquet is limited to 175 people. Tickets will be offered on
first-come, first-served basis. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Tickets for the banquet are $25 for members, $40 for non-members. The $40
includes the banquet, a one-year membership in Trout Unlimited and a
subscription to venerable Trout magazine. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 So cast those winter doldrums aside. Tie a few flies. Patch the leaky
waders. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Trout Unlimited in its effort to protect and conserve our precious freshwater
resources. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
