 WILKES-BARRE -- When dawn breaks on Monday a legion of orange-clad hunters
will be preparing to roam the Pennsylvania woods. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The heady scent of gun cleaner and freshly waterproofed boots will fill the
air as hunters pursue one of the state's most highly-esteemed big game
animals, the antlered whitetail deer. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Buck" season begins one-half hour before sunrise Monday and runs until
Dec. 12. Only antlered deer with two or more points per antler, or deer having
spikes three or more inches in length, can be taken during the 12-day season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 While archers already enjoyed a month-long season in October when a deer of
either sex could have been taken and a six-day buck season in early November,
Monday will mark the beginning of the official firearms deer hunting season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Hunters using firearms will also be able to pursue whitetails during the
three-day antlerless deer season set to run Dec. 14 through Dec. 16, and in
the flintlock season scheduled for Dec. 26 through Jan. 9. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Gunners with an antlerless deer permit will also be able to hunt specially
posted "Deer Damage Areas" Dec. 26 through Jan. 23. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 On Monday, the Pennsylvania Game Commission estimates that 1.25 million
gunners will be searching for antlered deer among a statewide herd estimated
at 975,000. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 When the season ends Dec. 12, the Commission expects between 130,000 and
160,000 antlered deer to have been taken. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Traditionally, 60 percent of the state's antlered deer harvest occurs on
the opening day. The second-best day for deer hunting is usually the first
Saturday of the season, when about nine percent of the total kill is recorded.
On the second day of the season, about eight percent of the harvest is
reported, according to the Commission. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 While percentage figures may serve as a gauge, the whitetail season truly
isn't over until the final day of the season. Last year there were 6,450 bucks
taken on the last day. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 One out of every six hunters in the woods Monday will be successful,
according to the Commission. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Game Commission harvest figures for last year indicate that 388,015
whitetails were taken during the archery and firearms seasons. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Of that figure, 149,598 deer sported antlers; 238,417 were "doe." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The statewide harvest figure dropped by 27,546 deer last year compared to
the record kill of 415,561 reported in 1990. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But this year the Game Commission remains optimistic. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Mild weather kept winter mortality to a minimum, and field officers have
reported that the whitetail food supply has been plentiful. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Commission maintains that there is an excellent supply of acorns --
except in those areas of the state ravaged by gypsy &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 moth caterpillars -- and that overall plant growth and fruit tree holdings
seem to be better than average due to timely rains throughout the spring and
summer months. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 All those positive factors just might add up to an outstanding deer hunting
season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Of the top five Pennsylvania counties in which the most antlered deer were
taken last year, Clearfield led the way with a harvest figure of 5,543.
Bradford County followed with 4,877; Potter had 4,315; Tioga, 4,257 and Centre
County filled the fifth best spot with 4,089. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The county in which the most antlerless deer were taken in 1991 was
Bradford, where 10,699 "doe" were harvested. Clearfield was second with 9,688;
Tioga was third with 7,398; Venango fourth with 6,425; and Washington County
came in fifth with 6,252. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Of the state's 67 counties, the most deer were taken from Bradford and
Clearfield Counties in '91. Hunters harvested 15,576 and 15,231 whitetails
there, respectively. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 While Clearfield County led the way in total antlered deer numbers, Berks
County ranked first in the state in terms of bucks harvested per forested
square mile with a rate of 11.1. Washington County followed with 10.6; Lehigh
came in second at 9.9; York, third at 9.8; and Greene fourth with 9.3. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 On a statewide basis, six bucks were harvested per forested square mile
throughout Pennsylvania, according to the Commission. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In terms of numbers, Luzerne County led all surrounding local counties in
total deer harvest figures and in the number of antlered deer taken. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Luzerne County hunters killed 7,737 deer (a drop of 161 from the previous
year) overall and 3,381 antlered deer in 1991. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Schuylkill County followed with 6,762 whitetails overall (a drop of 2,284
from the previous year) and 2,670 antlered deer. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Columbia County was third best, with 6,003 deer overall (down 498 from
1991) and 1,920 bucks. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 More than 4,000 deer were taken in Lackawanna, Wyoming and Sullivan
Counties. Monroe County hunters killed 3,229 whitetails, while hunters took
1,722 in Carbon County. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Columbia County led the local counties in the number of bucks taken per
forested square mile in 1991 with 8.8. Luzerne County followed, with 5.5. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Deer hunters in Pennsylvania must be licensed, and all first-time hunters
must complete a Hunter Education course before a license will be issued. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Adult resident hunting licenses cost $12.75; resident junior licenses for
hunters age 12 through 16 are $5.75. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Non-resident adult hunting licenses sell for $80.75. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Hunters pursuing antlerless deer during doe season and during the "Deer
Damage" hunt must possess a special tag, as must hunters using archery gear
and flintlock rifles during those special seasons. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 All big-game hunters in the state must wear 250 square inches of
fluorescent orange on their head, chest and back. The orange color must be
visible from every direction. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Shooting hours are one-half hour before sunrise until sunset. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Hunters involved in deer drives must possess the appropriate licenses for
the state and county. Successful hunters may participate in drives as long as
they are not carrying loaded weapons. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Five or more hunters who utilize a permanent camp and participate in deer
drives must maintain a roster. A copy of this roster must be carried by the
lead driver, and a copy must remain posted at the camp for 30 days following
the close of the season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Successful deer hunters must report their kill within 10 days to the Game
Commission's Harrisburg headquarters.
