As the little girl cautiously approached the enormous dinosaur, she asked
in a whisper, "Is it real?" &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Suddenly, the great apatosaurus raised its long green neck, turned its head
and looked her in the eye. "Brrragghh!" the creature roared, sending the tyke
scampering. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The 13 dinosaurs roaming, roaring and fighting in downtown Harrisburg are
as real and alive as a prehistoric beast could be today. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The life-like robots, called "Downtown Dinosaurs," will be on exhibit at
The Museum of Scientific Discovery until March 8. Just two hours away in
Harrisburg, their swamp offers a quick retreat for kids and parents when
winter vacation days start to drag on like the Ice Age. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 No bony museum skeletons here. No smiling, purple Barneys either. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Step into the exhibit lined with live foliage and travel back into the
forests of 65 to 250 million years ago. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A 66-million-year-old triceratops shuffles through the underbrush on stocky
legs, mooing like a cow and shaking his three horns. Nearby, a duck-billed
Parasauropolos towers over her nest of newly-hatched young. Occasionally, she
answers their tiny chirps with the bellow of a fog horn. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Dare to keep walking and enter the ancient Arizona desert. Look up. A
ferocious Dilophosaurus stares with red eyes. His sides move with heavy
breathing, his long neck ripples, he turns his head and snaps his teeth
together -- a dragon come to life. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 These dino-robots, created by Dinamation International Corp., move smoothly
and realistically with the help of a computer-controlled flow of compressed
air. Their movement sequence lasts about three to five minutes so that only
those who linger see the action repeated. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But how close to the real thing are these ferocious monsters? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "They are as accurate as a good guess can make them," says Bob Lyman, a
museum volunteer who directs tours through the exhibit. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 By studying fossilized remains, scientists have tried to piece together
what they think the dinosaurs looked like. Bone structures, muscle scars,
tracks and fossilized skin all serve as clues. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 No one knows for certain what color the prehistoric beasts were, so their
rubbery dinosaur skin reflects a shade that would have enabled them to blend
into their environment, Lyman says. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Part science, part dinosaur craze, the Dinamation dinosaurs are designed to
educate as well as spark curiosity. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Look at this hip," Lyman says pointing to a small dinosaur. "It looks more
like a bird's hip than a reptile's." That's why scientists believe modern-day
birds, not lizards, descended from these great beasts, he explains. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Before meeting the robotic dinosaurs, children can dig for bones and other
fossils hidden in a sand pit. They also can catch a 20-minute film on the
creatures and their extinction. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "A lot of kids feel science is scary," Lyman says. "But the more you learn
about it, the more it stirs the imagination. The more they start to question." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 When the exhibit's 11-foot-tall Tyrannosaurus opens its huge jaws and
roars, children get a frightening view of the sharp teeth that separate meat
eaters from plant eaters. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "A dinosaur tried to bite me," squealed 2-year-old Brandon Morris of
Mechanicsburg. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But not even a close encounter with King Rex drove away the tot's
curiosity. As he and father, Ike, neared the last exhibit, Brandon had only
one thing to say: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I want to see more dinosaurs!"
