`Gangsta rappers' soon will be shouting alone &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Now it's the National Political Congress of Black Women that is protesting
the violent and degrading lyrics in ``gangsta rap'' musicGood. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Finally, the public is speaking out about the graffiti, shouted
obscenities, and piles of tin cans that pass for "art" these days. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 On Friday, the group held a public meeting in Washington, D.C., and
announced its determination to persuade "gangsta rappers" to clean up their
acts. Group members don't seem shy about methods, either. They seem willing to
use boycotts, picket lines and other peaceful means to convince "gangsta
rappers" that swearing at women is a bad idea in a popular song. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Cursing, swearing, and celebrating rape are only a few problems with
"gangsta rap," of course. Urging listeners to kill police officers is another. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But the rappers apparently have stepped too far over the line. They've
alienated ministers, they've alienated radio stations (several of which have
voluntarily pulled material that is too offensive) and now they're alienating
mainstream political groups as well. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Enough, apparently, is enough. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 You know you're being rude when even champions of multicultural diversity
ask you to sit down and shut up. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Gangsta rappers" aren't alone in feeling this heat. A nationally known
cartoon maker recently vowed to uphold community standards in producing its
Saturday morning cartoons. And the nation's TV and movie producers also are
coming around -- slowly, gradually sensing that the mood of the country has
changed. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 None of this presents the slightest threat to the First Amendment. That
rule protects artists from government censors. It says nothing about the
marketplace. And it's silent about citizens using their non-violent power, not
to silence an artist, but merely to step back and turn away.
