A team that's going somewhere &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 It was just a little more than an hour before game time, and in a basement
training room at Penn State-Hazleton's Highacres Sports Complex, sophomore
center Tom Edwards was sitting in a whirlpool tub, submerged up to his chest
in warm waterHe was trying to get over a groin injury that could be a problem
in the upcoming game, a crucial matchup with Penn State-Scranton between two
of the Commonwealth Campus Athletic Conference's best teams. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It wouldn't be long before the rest of the players start drifting in, but
Jimmer Kane wasn't be among them. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Lions' starting point guard last semester, Kane is academically
ineligible for this semester, and for Hazleton's biggest game so far. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wednesday's game against Penn State-Scranton was the Lions' first in more
than a month, and possibly their most important of the season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And with everything against them, they dragged Scranton into overtime,
winning 105-101 to become the CCAC's only undefeated team. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This team has heart. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We played hard, and did a lot of things right," said Jason Bodnar, the
Lions' starting freshman forward who scored 18 points against Scranton. "We
made some mistakes, but we wanted it more." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 According to Bodnar, maybe they had reason to. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He says the Scranton coach, a few days before the game, "said something
about how they could spot us 20 points and still win." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Sure, Scranton has a talented team, and it may very well wind up a
contender the rest of the season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But to win like the Lions did, with everything going against them, shows
that this team is going somewhere. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 They may not have the flash of the Lion's last CCAC finalist, the 1990-1991
team that lost in the championship game, with fired up guys like Brian Billig
or speedsters like Joe Clark. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But this team can get it done. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "They're exceptional ball players, Caccese said, "and they do their talking
on the floor." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 They've said enough already. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 at Mathuse's remarkable season just keeps getting better. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Kutztown University sophomore has won five of six matches over the last
two weekends, and Saturday pushed his record to 16-2 on the season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wrestling at 118 pounds, he won a pair of decisions in the Northeastern
Team Duals Saturday, but also suffered one of his two losses this year, a
14-second pin by American International's Matt Brulotte. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Last weekend, he was Kutztown's only triple winner in a home quad meet,
winning decisions over all three of his opponents. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He's already been named the PSAC Wrestler of the Week once this season, and
the victories just keep right on coming. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 * * * &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 There may be no more touching success story than that of Joe Marshall, and
what he's done at Lafayette College in his two seasons there. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 It's not so much about basketball, but about a kid who truly worked to get
where he is when he played at West Hazleton, and who just keeps right on
working. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He's among the top scorers in the Patriot League with a 13.9 points per
game average, not far behind MMI graduate Keith Brazzo, who is listed as
day-to-day with a severely sprained ankle. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Marshall, a 6-4 sophomore who was an all-state player at West Hazleton, was
named to the Patriot League Honor Roll this week, for his career high 24-point
performance against national power Florida State. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I can't help but think back to his junior year at West Hazleton, not long
after the season ended. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 We talked over lunch about his basketball career, and he told me how
important it was to him to do well as a senior. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 If he didn't earn a scholarship, Marshall told me, there was no way he
could go to college. His family just couldn't afford it. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But now he's at a first-rate school, doing what he knew he could, making
the most of a chance he worked so hard to get.
