HAZLETON -- After what his Spartans have already seen this season, Wyoming
Valley West wrestling coach Steve Gavrish says the District 2 tournament is
almost easy. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We wrestle a tough schedule," said Gavrish. "We wrestled the Hurricane
Tournament at Bethlehem Liberty and finished 15th of 16 teams. This is a lot
easier than that." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It certainly looked easy Friday night, as the Spartans placed 10 wrestlers
in the semifinals of the District 2 Class AAA tournament at Hazleton Area High
School. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Only three weight classes won't include Spartan wrestlers when the
semifinals get under way today at 10 a.m. at Hazleton Area. Consolation
matches will follow, with the finals set for 7 p.m. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Not far behind the Spartans are Hazleton Area and Coughlin, which each
placed seven wrestlers in the semifinals. Abington Heights and West Scranton
placed six apiece. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We thought Coughlin and Hazleton Area were the favorites, and we thought
we'd be in there," Gavrish said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 That the Spartans controlled the two-day tournament's first round was no
surprise, as Wyoming Valley West won the Class AAA title the last two years,
beating out Hazleton Area. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wyoming Valley West wrestlers advancing to the semis were Ryan Shumbris
(103), Rob Trotter (119), Joe Cheek (125), Steve Austin (130), Mike Hando
(135), Steve Williams (140), Corey Simko (145), John McLaughlin (152), Eric
Coslett (171) and Joshua Blockus (275). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Among individual wrestlers, there were few surprises. Of the seven seeded
wrestlers who lost championship-round bouts on Friday night, only one was a
first or second seed. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Jason Hasker of Hazleton Area, the top seed at 125, was pinned by the
Spartans' Cheek in 3:37 of their opening-round match. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Four defending district champions advanced to the semifinals. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 At 152, Pittston Area's Tony Barbrie -- who won that title last year --
scored a 14-5 quarterfinal victory over Berwick's Cliff Labour. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Rob Trotter, who won the 125-pound title for the Spartans last year, is
wrestling at 119 pounds this season. And his one minute, 11 second pin of
Coughlin's Jason Atilano put him in the semis. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Defending 189-pound champion Joe Farber of Tunkhannock made the semis with
a pair of wins. In the preliminaries he defeated Scranton Prep's Brian Murphy
by pin in 2:26. And in the quarterfinals Farber scored a 16-1 technical fall
over Mike Resseque of Berwick. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Also returning to defend his title is West Scranton's John Fox at 160. Fox
won a 16-1 technical fall over Honesdale's Nick Gwozdziewycz in the
quarterfinals. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
