PLYMOUTH -- In eight minutes Thursday night, the young Berwick Lady
Bulldogs did more than mature as basketball players. They matured from
contenders to champions. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Lady Dawgs, four sophomores and a junior, rallied with a brilliant
fourth quarter to knock off defending champion Hazleton Area 49-42 at Wyoming
Valley West High School, winning the Wyoming Valley Conference Division I
title. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; "I had nothing to do with it," said Berwick coach Vince Trivelpiece, who
helped build a woeful program into champions in six seasons. "The kids just
wanted to win. They practiced hard all summer. They are addicted to
basketball. They didn't want to lose." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Berwick, which won the first-half title, tied with Hazleton Area for the
second-half championship. If Hazleton Area would have won, the two teams would
have played again Saturday for the overall title. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Lady Dawgs wanted nothing of that. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Whenever we're down, we always think we could come back and win," said
Berwick sophomore Erin Priestman, who hit two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter
to help Berwick rally from a seven-point deficit. "We played well together,
and all our shots kept falling." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Five in all found the mark in the fourth quarter. Besides Priestman's
3-pointers, center Steph Rothery added three more. Megan Dellegrotti added six
free throws, helping Berwick outscore Hazleton Area 22-10. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "They were double-teaming me, but everyone stepped it up," said Rothery,
who scored eight of her 14 points in the fourth quarter. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Berwick needed to. Hazleton Area, behind eight points by Megan LaBuda, went
on a 14-3 run to start the third quarter to take a 27-20 lead. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We felt we were ready to put them away," Hazleton Area coach Joe Gavio
said. "Then they would answer right back." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Berwick eventually tied the score at 27-27, but LaBuda added an inside
basket and Kristy Houseknecht hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Lady
Cougars a 32-27 advantage. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Lady Dawgs didn't panic. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We decided to play it cool," said Rothery. "We were confident coming in
because we knew they had to beat us twice." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 So when Houseknecht hit two more 3-pointers in the fourth, Priestman
responded with two of her own. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We couldn't enjoy it," Gavio said. "If we had just one defensive stop
there, it could have been a different game." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Berwick kept continued breaking the Lady Cougars' momentum until
Dellegrotti hit two free throws to give the Lady Dawgs a 42-40 lead with 4:01
left. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The defense then held Hazleton to one field goal the rest of the way while
Dellegrotti, Rothery and Rochelle Romeo did the job at the foul line. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Someone said to me in school `Vince, you're kids are so young, but young
kids bounce back'," Trivelpiece said. "I'll take that." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Both teams will continue play in the District 2 playoffs. Berwick will be
in the Class AAA tourney while Hazleton Area will be in the Class AAAA
tourney. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 PLYMOUTH -- Seton Catholic clinched the second seed out of the WVC in the
upcoming District 2 Class A playoffs with a victory over Wyoming Seminary at
Wyoming Valley West High School. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Both teams finished 10-6 in the WVC, forcing the special playoff. Seminary
will be the third seed. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Laine Sheerer paced Seton with 27 points. Kelly Tracy added 13. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Jami Layaou scored 12 to pace Seminary. Megan Dimond had 11 and Johanna
Ashley added 10. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
