Attention on Susquehanna is overdue, not misplaced &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Once upon a time the only way the Susquehanna could get your attention was
to overflow its banks and come right into your basementIn recent years,
however, our river is getting some respect without having to threaten us -- or
almost, if you don't count this past January. We are at last seeing the
Susquehanna as a rich natural resource with great potential for transforming
this area into a center of recreation and an attraction to tourists. Nothing
attested to that more vividly than the Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt
floating down our river in the head canoe of a most official flotilla two days
ago. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; When we start accentuating the positive, others will too. And while none is
so naive to think that Secretary Babbitt's visit was not politically motivated
and provided the administration with an effective swipe at Republican efforts
to defang the Clean Water Act, the fact remains our river is getting national
attention. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A good deal of credit belongs to the members of Susquehanna River Watch,
the Riverfront Parks Committee, U.S. Rep. Paul Kanjorski, and a growing number
of involved, outspoken citizens who draw our attention to the promise and
potential of our river. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 We're on a roll right now: The Secretary of the Interior has traveled our
waterway; the levees have been approved; the pumping stations will be
repaired; plans for the riverfront are being discussed with enthusiasm and
seriousness; and everybody's anteing up their two-cents' worth on the
feasibility of an inflatable dam. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This is no time for the citizens of the Wyoming Valley to go with the flow.
We must focus on making the Susquehanna a place of beauty, recreation and
economic opportunity for our area. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
