Leslie Fay reports finances improving &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 NEW YORK -- The Leslie Fay Companies, Inc. reported Friday improved
financial results for the second quarter and first half of the 1996 fiscal
year compared to the same periods last yearIn the second quarter that ended on
June 29, Leslie Fay reported an operating profit of $500,000 compared with an
operating loss of $5.2 million for the same period of 1995. The company
attributed the turnaround to a change in business strategy that included,
closing domestic production operation for dress and sportswear divisions. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The company has an administrative services center in Hanover Township and
formerly operated a plant in Plains Township. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Net sales for the quarter were $83.1 million, down $9.5 million from the
same period last year. The decrease was attributed to the company's decision
to close its Leslie Fay retail division, discontinue other labels and redirect
the company's selling efforts away from unprofitable customers. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 On a comparable business basis, after excluding the closings and new
businesses, the company had a net sales increase of 1.5 percent for the
quarter compared to same period last year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Additional quarterly figures include a net income of $100,000 or 1 cent a
share compared with a net loss of $12.1 or 64 cents a share for the same
period in 1995. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 For the first half of the fiscal year, the company reported an operating
income of $8 million on sales of $204.1 million. Last year, the company
reported an operating loss of $5.9 million on sales of $224.6 million for the
same period. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Net income for the first half of the fiscal year was $6 million or 32 cents
a share compared to a net loss of $15.5 million or 83 cents a share for the
first half of 1995. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The company and the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors of Leslie Fay
are in the process of developing a reorganization plan to emerge out of
Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The plans include separating the company's
Sassco Fashions business from the core Leslie Fay businesses. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
