Teachers union, Democratic Party protect the public school monopoly &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Homeowners are now receiving their school tax bills. It upsets me that we
must pay such a heavy tax for our public school monopoliesPoliticians are
blind to the burden school taxes are placing on all of us and, in particular,
our senior citizens. They do not understand the adverse effect these
increasing taxes have on our cities and state. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The coming elections are very important. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Vice-President Al Gore recently called public education the "bulwark of our
democracy -- the greatest equalizer and gateway to opportunity." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 President Clinton, Vice President Gore and the liberal wing of the
Democratic Party have the strong support of the teacher unions. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Bulwark of democracy? What does a public school monopoly have to do with
democracy, Vice-President Gore? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Part of this nation's greatness comes from our ability to compete.
Competition breeds improvement. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 At present we spend more on education than any other nation, and yet our
test scores continue to drop. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The teacher unions wield enormous influence over many politicians, which is
how this monopoly continues. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 How could our nation break the monopoly of the phone company but choose to
do nothing about the monopoly of power the teacher unions hold? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 What control do these unions have over our politicians to allow this to
continue? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Competition is the key to improving education and lowering costs for all of
us. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Remember on election day that the teacher unions are strong supporters of
the Democratic Party. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 It would be interesting to ask our president and vice-president their
opinions on school competition vs. school monopolies. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
