Life's pleasures are not in the rush but the flow &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a
&amp;%$#@* &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; big television. Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players, and
electric can openers ... Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing junk food into your mouth ..I chose
not to choose life. I chose something else. And the reasons? There are no
reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 * * * &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Well, when you put it that way, as a character in the new movie
"Trainspotting" does, the pleasures of middle-class life do sound pretty
small. No wonder the young people in the movie trash their lives and live in
roach-happy squalor, rejecting the gentle sway of a suburban porch swing for
the orgasmic thrill-ride of heroin. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And no wonder, too, that so many American kids seem hell-bent on doing the
same. Drug use among American teens surged 78 percent since 1992, a government
study reported Tuesday. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But the "Trainspotting" portrait is wrong. Middle-class life offers so much
more than game shows and junk food. And it's high time the great American
middle class said so, improving upon the proven "Just Say No" campaign by
giving kids something to "Just Say Yes" to. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 It can be done. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Just ask the Boy Scouts of America. For 88 years, the Boy Scouts have
taught citizenship, service and responsibility by the roundabout route of
taking kids hiking, canoeing and camping. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 That canteen wouldn't seem to hold water. But as Scout leaders know,
something happens to boys or girls who behold the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania
for the first time, or stop paddling long enough to spot a black bear slapping
the water of the Susquehanna. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Suddenly those youngsters sense the satisfaction and contentment that come
from communing with nature. They bask in an unfamiliar emotion -- humility --
while gazing at the majesty of God's creation. The look at their Scoutmasters
with new and respectful eyes, when those adults take time from their schedules
to teach knot-tying, fire-building and S'more-making one on one. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And they say a silent prayer of thanks to their ancestors, who used
democracy to preserve the rivers and forests for all to enjoy. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Just ask the parents of a first-grader, too. Parenting books prepare you
for the tantrums and other hassles of raising kids. But they don't prepare you
for the joys. If you like old movies, for example, you'll love the thrill of
introducing your kids to "The Magnificent Seven," "It's A Wonderful Life" and
the rest on video. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A simple walk around the block turns into a delightful butterfly-watching
and birdcall-listening session when it's done with a six-year-old. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And pause, tonight, when you stand in the doorway of your child's bedroom
and look down at your youngster's sleeping form. Smile as usual at the tousled
hair, the blankets on the floor, the arms and legs akimbo. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Pause now for a moment to think about drugs. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Who needs that, you'll murmur, when you've got this? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Just ask a couple celebrating their 50th anniversary, as well. Together,
they've seen it all: War; economic depression; almost surely, a family tragedy
or two. Veterans of rat races, of midlife crises and of keeping up with the
Joneses, they've lived the various American Nightmares as well as the American
Dream. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 So ask them, too. While their children and grandchildren surround them;
while they reach beneath the table for their beloved's wrinkled hand; while
they reflect on the matchless ups and countless downs of American family life,
ask them: Would they have traded any of it for a brief fling with heroin? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The nihilists of the drug culture claim middle-class life is all
loneliness, hypocrisy and conformity. And yes, those elements are there. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But so is so much more. A life well-lived offers rewards more thrilling and
satisfying than even the purest heroin. Raising kids, nurturing a marriage and
holding a job can offer a person both dignity and pleasure -- and responsible
citizens from coast to coast should stand up and say so. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
