Never one to get caught up in statistics or computer read-outs, Louisville
coach Ron Cooper has a rather simple rule he follows when looking for football
players. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "As long as they're tough, they can play for me." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Cooper might as well have been speaking of Tyrus McCloud. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The senior from Pompano Beach, Fla., is considered one of the premier
linebackers in the country and the undisputed defensive team leader for the
Cardinals, who meet Penn State at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Beaver Stadium. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Conference USA's Defensive Player of the Year in 1995, McCloud is off to
another fine start this season. In Louisville's 38-14 season-opening victory
at Kentucky last week, the rugged 6-foot-2-inch, 251-pound McCloud recorded 18
tackles, had two sacks, broke up two passes and basically was a thorn in the
Wildcats' paw all night long. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "He's a kind that can find the ball," Cooper said of his star. "There's no
question he's our leader on defense." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "My philosophy is to play every play like it's my last," McCloud, 21, said.
"I want to be the guy everyone else looks to to make the big play." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 More often than not, McCloud makes that play. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He led Louisville in tackles (126) and tackles for loss (11) in '95, the
second consecutive year he's accomplished that feat. He also collected four
sacks, caused three fumbles, picked off two passes and broke up two more. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Tyrus is a coach's dream," Cooper said. "He plays just like he practices." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Without question the hardest worker on the squad, McCloud also is the
team's strongest player. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Every off season, Louisville strength coach Ray Ganong tests each Cardinal
football player in a number of areas, enters the results into a formula and
determines who is the best physical specimen in the program. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 McCloud was the hands-down winner. The numbers tell the story: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Bench press -- 508 pounds. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Squat -- 577 pounds. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Clean and jerk -- 330 pounds. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Chin-ups -- 26 reps. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Dips -- 53 reps. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Sit-ups -- 71 reps. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I worked very hard (in the weight room) to get to where I am now," said
McCloud, who offered his 381-pound bench during his freshman season as an
example. "The only way you can get better is by putting in the time. You want
to be a leader, then you better lead by example." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Named as one of the top 13 candidates to win the Butkus Award, McCloud is
looking to become just the third Cardinal to lead the team in tackles for
three straight seasons. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He's already joined the likes of Doug Buffone, Tom Jackson and Otis Wilson
as players that led Louisville in stops in back-to-back campaigns. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "A tough kid," Cooper said proudly. "It's good to see him getting some
recognition." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 McCloud will no doubt receive more publicity than he can handle with a big
game against the Nittany Lions Saturday. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 After all, what better place for a linebacker to strut his stuff than at
"Linebacker U?" &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We're excited about this game," McCloud said. "It's a chance for us to
show the country what Louisville football is all about." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
