`Takings' bill should be left alone to protect landowners from zealots &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This is a reply to the exaggerations, distortions and lies by opponents of
SB &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 1587, the Private Property Protection Act, who have aired their views in
letters to The Times LeaderTo them, only the wealthy will benefit by this act. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The truth is, only the wealthy have the means to legally dispute the United
States or National Wildlife Federation, whose president commands more legal
talent than President Clinton, and a larger salary, too. This executive
operates from a multimillion dollar headquarters in Washington and is
supported zealously by tunnel-visioned converts. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I can name many nearby property owners of limited means who were hurt badly
without compensation by environmental laws of ridiculous extremes. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Other recent examples are: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The East Side Landfill. A slight depression made wetlands for a few ducks,
toads and other creatures. It cost the county thousands to correct. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Industrial Park in Hanover Township. A blocked drainpipe created a
mosquito-infested eyesore of a wetland, and opening the drain pipe was
forbidden. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Then there was the Pennsylvania auto mechanic, an immigrant from Eastern
Europe, who bought 10 acres of land near his business. When he cleared the
debris and started to fill low areas, he was warned to stop filling wetlands. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He continued, refusing to believe the United States would punish him for
improving a land parcel. He was sentenced to jail and heavily fined for his
misconduct. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 As for taxes, about 50 years ago the New Jersey Meadowlands was a wetland
dump. You traveled through it on Route 22 choking on smoke from the burning
refuse. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Today real estate and businesses there pay billions of dollars in taxes,
and the area includes an airport and sports stadium. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The problems of environmental overkill are national and need legislative
correction. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Opposing SB 1587 is denying justice. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
