Wyoming Valley Country Club marks 100 years with dinner dance &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 There's no better way to celebrate 100 years of fellowship than with a
black tie dinner danceThat was the way members of the Wyoming Valley Country
Club planned to mark 100 years of golf and membership last evening. The dinner
is the culmination of many events held during the yearlong Centennial
Celebration. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The evening was to begin with cocktails served on the patio and under a
sprawling tent decorated with hanging baskets of variegated ivy and ficus
trees. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Guests could enjoy hors d'oeuvres of scallops wrapped in bacon, mini-crab
cakes and vegetable and cheese trays. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Reflecting the elegance and charm of a century before, the clubhouse was to
be filled with lavender and white wisteria cascading from white birch
branches; dinner tables covered with pink tablecloths accented with
European-style fresh floral centerpieces of Rubrun lilies and Queen Anne's
lace surrounded by the soft glow of votive candles. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Club president Ted Patton was to lead a champagne toast, followed by
remarks from Tom Tinsley, chairman of the Centennial Committee, and Charles
Burns, general chairman. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Ladies would find silver jewelry cases at their place settings as a memento
of the occasion. Appetizers of shrimp cocktail were to be followed by filet
mignon bordelaise, with rossoli potatoes and bundles of carrots and asparagus.
Flaming cherries jubilee would provide the finale to the lovely meal. The Joe
Sable Orchestra was to provide music for dancing, including a song composed
for the anniversary gala. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The event would not have been possible without the hard work of chairwomen
Jeanette Dombroski and Joan Ravin -- who, with the help of so many others --
tried to make this a once in a lifetime event that would be remembered fondly
by those attending. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Labor Day weekend was blessed with incredible weather, possibly the nicest
weekend of the summer, and there were lots of great events to enjoy. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Newberry Estates held its annual Calcutta Tennis Tournament. The weekend
began Friday, Aug. 30, in the pavilion with a casual dinner and barbecue,
catered by Apple Tree Terrace. Members Bernie and Claudette Banks enjoyed
entertainment by Cutter and the Doctor, while watching Rob Weaver and Marty
Moore in a friendly match with Rob Blase and Dan Silverstein on the lighted
courts. The round was a warmup for the tournament on Sunday, Sept. 1.
Championship winners were Julie Valderama and Dave Germick. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Newberry also held the season's end Golf Championship on Sunday, Aug. 25.
Bob Edgerton Sr. took first place in the Men's Championship, with Bill Rogers
placing a close second. Julie Mantione won the Ladies' Championship. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Harveys Lake Yacht Club wrapped up the summer with its final race of
the season on Sunday, Sept 1. Bob Hall was the winner of the handicap race in
his Lightning, with Karl Arbogast coming in second and Lane Gibbins third. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Also participating were Joan Williams, Kevin Blaum and Henry Stubien.
Sunday's race finished the 15-race season. A family picnic was held on Monday,
with Frank Wadas giving the awards for the season's winners. Blaum won the
overall first place finish, and Hall finished in second place. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Westmoreland Club hosted a Labor Day weekend Crabfeast on Saturday, Aug
31. Over 100 members and their guests enjoyed cocktails and a sumptuous raw
bar, featuring lobster claws, oysters on-the-halfshell and poached salmon.
Norman and Adele Dressler and Tim and Judy Mack shared the evening with Alan
and Evelyn Finlay and Frank and Mary Lee Cuscela, who were entertained with
light jazz by Brass and Ivory. The evening was highlighted with the main
course of all-you-can-eat steamed hardshell crabs or prime rib, topped off by
strawberries Grand Marnier flambe for dessert. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The weather was perfect for doing some antiquing and browsing at yard
sales. Over 2,000 people took the scenic drive along Route 29 to Dale K. Myers
Antiques near Tunkhannock for the annual Hay Field Antiques Market on
Saturday, Aug. 31, and Sunday, Sept 1. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Seventy dealers participated in the market offering wonderful things to see
and purchase. It was a spectacular day, though quite hot in the afternoon.
Patrons enjoyed refreshments in the shade in the recently completed English
garden and patio and rested on wrought-iron benches and tables flanked by a
gorgeous display of flowers. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Woodlands was the site of the Junior League of Wilkes-Barre's Summer
Cocktail Party and Social held Saturday, Aug. 10. More than 50 League members
and their friends enjoyed cool cocktails and delicious hors d'oeuvres .
Festive music was provided by D.J. John Stucker and rounded out the evening on
the Woodland's upper deck. Enjoying the evening were June and Sam DeSalvo and
Sue and Ken Wallace with Sharon and Dru Blaszczak and Marylin and Walt
Glogowski. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Sharon Blaszczak, League president, noted that the League would soon begin
its fall membership drive. Women interested in learning more about the
organization can call the office at 821-5596. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Junior League is a women's organization dedicated to improving the
lives of women and children in our community. The group's major project for
the upcoming year is a collaborative effort with the Wilkes-Barre YMCA to
create a rooftop playground at the facility. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Among upcoming events, mark Thursday on your calendar. The Catholic Youth
Center is hosting an Auction of Fine Art at the Kirby Center on Public Square.
All of the artwork to go on the block is framed and affordable, ranging from
~$45 to $450. There will be sports memorabilia as well. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The evening begins with the preview of the works from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. An
assortment of wonderful hors d'oeuvres will be provided by many local
restaurants as well as wine and cheese and coffee and cakes. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Admission is $15 per person or $25 per couple. For tickets and further

 Places to go and be seen....Back Mountain gardeners know Hoss's Garden Hut
is the place to find everything you need for every type of garden. But Hoss's
is moving from Harveys Lake to the old Yalick's Farm Market at the
intersection of routes 118 and 415....For anyone who likes to eat -- and who
doesn't? -- stop in PAR 4 Cafe at 128 Parrish St. in Wilkes-Barre. Proprietor
Brian Freeman specializes in microbrews and has over 100 selections to choose
from. Brian's mom, Joann, reigns in the kitchen creating dishes of
international cuisine that change monthly...If you missed the Commitments at
the River Street Jazz Cafe, you missed a tremendous show. The Plains Township
club has an incredible line-up for September: L'il Georgie and the Shufflin
Hungarians on the 20th, Sweet Potata all-female blues band on the 21st, Popa
Chubby on the 27th and Johnny Copeland on the 28th. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
