WILKES-BARRE -- Past and present members of the 109th Field Artillery vowed
never to forget 33 battalion members who lost their lives in a train wreck 46
years ago. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The soldiers who died early on Sept. 11, 1950, were remembered with full
military pageantry on the front lawn of the armory Sunday during the 46th
Annual Memorial Service. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; "We will not let the memories of those men fade away," said retired Command
Sgt. Maj. John J. Sauer Jr. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 During the memorial service, Maj. Gen. Frank Townend of Dallas recapped the
unlucky events that led to the fatal crash. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He said he wanted his battalion loaded into trucks instead of the train,
but was told by his superiors that it was too dangerous for all the men to
ride in a convoy. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Weeks later, with the troops on the train, a brake line broke on the last
two cars, leaving the train stranded on the tracks at Coshocton, Ohio. Townend
said flares were set up, but the driver of an oncoming train must not have
been paying attention. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A survivor and former first sergeant, Joseph Zukosky of Forty Fort, said he
still has vivid images of that day. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It comes back like it happened yesterday. It still hits me a little bit,"
Zukosky said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Sunday, the honor roll of the dead was called under dark skies as solemn
music was played by the Wyoming Valley Band. As the band played, dog tags were
placed on crosses that symbolized each of the 33 dead. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In his remarks, Sauer told the troops, former artillery members and family
members that it was necessary to reopen the old wounds and grieve. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It reminds us how precious life is to us all," Sauer said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
