Aircraft icing often beyond crews' control &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Recent winter crashes of aircraft sometimes can be traced to glaze ice on
propellers and wings during bad weatherDuring World War II, I experienced
serious icing while flying a C46 aircraft from New York to Gander,
Newfoundland. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Whenever we expected or experienced icing, we usually would pour alcohol on
the propeller blades and turn on the wing de-icer boots to break up the ice. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 However, on this particular flight we experienced unusally high icing
conditions. Even after we upped the engine power, we were barely able to
maintain altitude. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Five of us onboard including the co-pilot began throwing everything out the
door that wasn't tied down: toolboxes, food, portable heaters, etc. A total of
about 1000 pounds went out to lighten the aircraft. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I don't suggest that we start throwing luggage out the door when severe
icing occurs, however, the public should be aware that in some cases it may
not be the fault of the pilot or crew. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
