Greening of Lake's career began in Wyoming Valley &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The things that Carlton Lake loved as a boy in Kingston carried with him to
the end of his life in Philadelphia at age 74 last weekA 1935 Wilkes-Barre
Record story described the 12-year-old Lake as having a "rich mezzo-soprano
voice unusual for a boy his age" and an "attachment for animals" including his
pet dogs, bantam chickens and pigeons. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The story detailed Lake's first-place finish in that year's Eisteddfod, a
Welsh music competition still held annually in the Dr. Edwards Me morial
Congregational Church in Edwards ville that is one of this region's cultural
trea sures. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Lake merged his love for music and his Welsh heritage in his studies at
Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania, earning a doctorate with
a dissertation on the "The Music and Music Festivals of the Welsh." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He went on to teach vocal music in the Philadelphia area and to found the
All-Philadelphia Boys Choir and the Academy Boys Choir. The choirs, with Lake
as director, toured England, Austria, Holland, Denmark, Germany, and, of
course, Wales. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He also founded the Philadelphia School of Performing Arts and acted as a
conductor and judge at eisteddfods across the country. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In his obituary in the Philadelphia Inquirer last week, colleagues
remembered Lake as a great artist, teacher and friend. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "He had a gift for friendship, a wonderful manner in dealing with people,
and tremendous skills in bringing out the best in young people," said Dan
Rothermel, musical director of the Savoy Opera Company and a music teacher in
Philadelphia schools. "Kids who were in trouble in school would behave like
angels for him." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "When he conducted the choir, your eyes didn't move off him, no matter who
was in the audience," said Bill Leach, who sang for Lake in the 1960s. "That's
the kind of control he had. He was the best there is and ever was." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Lake, who never married, is survived by two cats, one with the Wels
