 PEI POWER SIGNS METHANE GAS DEAL: PEI Power Corp., a subsidiary of &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Pennsylvania Enterprises Inc., has signed an agreement with the Keystone &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Sanitary Landfill in Dunmore that will provide the power company with more
than 150 billion cubic feet of methane gas during the next 30 yearsPEI Power
Corp. will use the methane gas to fuel its recently acquired 25 megawatt
co-generation plant in Archbald. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The landfill is expected to produce enough methane to supply all of the
power plant's fuel requirements. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 PP&amp;L REPORTS EARNINGS DROPPED: PP&amp;L Resources has reported net income of
$73.3 million or 44 cents per share during the fourth quarter of 1997,
compared to $73.1 million or 45 cents per share during the same period a year
ago. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 When adjusted for normal weather in both periods, earnings per share would
have been 41 cents in the fourth quarter of 1997, compared to 43 cents in the
fourth quarter of 1996. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 For the 12 months ended Dec. 31, PP&amp;L Resources reported earnings of $1.80
per share, compared to $2.05 per share for the previous year. Excluding the
effects of weather and one-time adjustments, earnings were $2.03 per share for
1997, compared to $2 per share for 1996. The effects of milder weather in
1997, coupled with a colder winter season in 1996, adversely affected earnings
by 3 cents per share in 1997 and favorably affected earnings by 5 cents per
share in 1996. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Previously reported one-time adjustments- including a windfall profits tax
in the United Kingdom based on PP&amp;L Global's equity interest in a U.K.
utility- reduced 1997 earnings by 20 cents per share. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Procter &amp; Gamble Co. said Tuesday that quarterly profits increased 11
percent to $1.046 billion as the company stepped up its business abroad. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The maker of household products said earnings per share were 71 cents on a
diluted basis for the second fiscal quarter, which ended Dec. 31. A year
earlier, P&amp;G reported earnings of $944 million, or 63 cents per share. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Worldwide net sales for the quarter were $9.6 billion, a 5 percent increase
from $9.1 billion a year earlier. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The company's stock rose $2.37 , or 3 percent, to close at $80.87 on the
New York Stock Exchange. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 FIRST UNION'S EARNINGS UP: First Union Corp. has reported an 11 percent
increase in operating earnings, before special charges, to $2.1 billion in
1997 compared to $1.9 billion in 1996. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Operating earnings per common share were $3.34 in 1997, compared with $3.04
per common share in 1996. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Growth in earnings was due in large part to a 30 percent increase in
noninterest income, primarily from First Union's rapidly growing Capital
Markets and Capital Management areas. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The 1997 operating earnings represent a return on average common equity of
18.90 percent and a return on average assets of 1.39 percent, up from 18.50
percent and 1.30 percent, respectively, in 1996. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 JAPAN'S FINANCE CHIEF TO STEP DOWN: Jolted by the arrests of two senior
officials at Japan's most powerful ministry, the nation's finance chief said
Tuesday he will step down. The officials were allegedly entertained lavishly
by banks in return for tip-offs about the ministry's "surprise" inspections. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Finance Minister Hiroshi Mitsuzuka, who has not been directly implicated in
the scandal, had come under intense pressure to resign after prosecutors
raided his ministry on Monday and opposition lawmakers vowed to block critical
budget legislation until he quit. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 News reports say officials were entertained extravagantly in restaurants
featuring scantily clad waitresses. Dinners were said to cost about $250 per
person; tips often ran an additional $80 per waitress. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
