 Joe Camel is dead. Dead is bashy. (that's ``cool'' in current slang).
They're fining stores that sell cigarettes to minors. Illegal things are
bangin' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; (that's cool, too). Fewer adults are smoking. Adults are bamma (definitely
uncool)So cigarettes are flossin'. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And parents should be fretting. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 One of the most troubling health statistics in recent years has been the
upswing in cigarette smoking among teenagers. While adult smoking rates
continue to decline, the percentage of teenagers who smoke began rising in the
early 1990s. And it continues to rise. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Several studies point the finger at cigarette advertisements that are
attractive to young people, for example, the late Joe Camel ads and the more
abstract, but still trendy, designs that have replaced him. Others lay the
blame at the entertainment industry, particularly movies, which seem to
resurrected the smoking = glamour mystique that held sway in 1930s Hollywood. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Girls, it would seem, are particularly vulnerable to this type of
indoctrination. Up until a few years ago, more female high school seniors
smoked than their male classmates. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Studies show that smoking goes hand-in-hand with another health problem
facing teenage girls, an out-of-proportion concern with weight. About 40
percent of white teenage girls smoke, according to the Centers for Disease
Control. Smoking is not only obese (very cool), it can help keep a girl from
becoming a Little Debbie (overweight female). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Smoking's new resurgence threatens to become a health crisis in coming
years, since most adult smokers began their nicotine habit between the age of
13 and 18. Every day, 3,000 kids try their first cigarette. That's 1 million
smokers per year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The current trend could lead to a catastrophic spike in cancer deaths in
the next century. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 All this presents a challenge to parents and educators who have to struggle
against the hype to convince teenagers that smoking now is likely to lead to a
hard-to-kick habit with potentially deadly consequences. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Our schools must do more to educate students about the dangers of smoking
