The preliminary accident report on a North Carolina plane crash that killed Wyoming Seminary trustee Michael Apfelbaum could be available as early as this weekend, a National Transportation Safety Board spokesman said. If not, the report would almost certainly be publicly available by next weekend.&#8220;The goal is to get it done within two weeks,&#8221; Peter Knudson said.Apfelbaum, 55, was piloting a Beachcraft A36 outside of Greensboro, North Carolina, Monday when the plane crashed into a quarry. According to reports, it burst into flames, killing Apfelbaum, his wife and her father. They were said to be returning from Florida to Apfelbaum&#8217;s home in Northumberland County, where he worked as an attorney.Apfelbaum became a member of the Seminary board of trustees in 2010, and his son graduated from the private school in 2011.&#8220;I was truly stunned when I heard about the death of Michael, Christy and her father,&#8221; Seminary Vice President of Advancement John Shafer said in an email. &#8220;It has been my privilege to know three generations of the Apfelbaum Family; Michael&#8217;s mother graduated from Sem in 1944 and his son JonSidney in 2011.&#8220;I worked closely with Michael in his role not only as a Sem trustee but also in his capacity as a director of the Degenstein Foundation,&#8221; Shafer, class of 1971, wrote. &#8220;He and his family cared very deeply about their community and devoted so much of their time and energy to the betterment of the citizens of central and northeastern Pennsylvania. My heart goes out to his family.The Degenstein Foundation provides funding for a wide range of programs with an emphasis on innovative ideas to help children, education, health care, business, culture and the environment. In 2013 Geisinger Health System received a $1 million grant from the foundation for a study of health impacts from Marcellus Shale gas drilling.Seminary Board of Trustees Chairman Richard Goldberg echoed Shafer&#8217;s sentiments.&#8220;I was shocked and saddened to learn of Michael&#8217;s tragic passing. He has been a valued and respected colleague on our Board of Trustees since 2010. A distinguished lawyer and civic leader in the Sunbury area, Michael provided wise counsel to the Sem board.
